My mother has accidentally deleted all her holiday photos from the card.
I told her not to panic, leave the card untouched and I would sort it
out when I see her next week.
I have a SanDisk Rescue Pro 1.0 disc. This seems to work well on jpegs,
so I should be able to sort out my mother's deleted jpegs.
However, I noticed when trying it out on one of my wiped cards (wiped
deliberately, I should add!) which had been used for RAW images on my
5D, that it recovered them as files with a .TIF extension. These files
were unviewable with Adobe Camera Raw and with Canon's File Viewer
utility, even when I re-named them with the correct .CRW extension.
Oddly, I could see them and open them in Canon's (utterly foul)
ZoomBrowser, but not convert them to anything else; all attempts to do
so made it crash.
Two questions:
(1) Does anyone have any recommendations for a better recovery utility
than Rescue Pro? - preferably free!
(2) Does anyone have any idea why Rescue Pro 1.0 won't handle the 5D
..CRW files correctly - is it that it pre-dates the 5D, and if so will a
later version work?

David,
One of my family members formatted a 2 GB CF card before downloading so
I tried Rescue Pro (which came free with a SanDisk Extreme card, I
think). These were .CRW files with the 1D Mark II ... at first the
program found all the .jpg thumbnails embedded in the RAW files but not
the full sized .CRW files so I got a bit worried, but I was able to
figure out that this was apparently due to the default max file size
setting for R-P being 1 MB ... so for longer files it would quit before
finding the EOF tags I guess.
At any rate I was able to change the setting to 10 MB and after a lot
of churning and thrashing all the files were recovered. So maybe with
the 5D change the max file size value to 12-15 MB in Rescue Pro
(whatever, not sure how big they are) and give it a go.

Are these files the right size? What you are seeing is still
consistent with what I got on the initial run of Rescue Pro, the
embedded files within the .CRW file were extracted and I could preview
them in the Canon software but the actual RAW file was missing ...
sometimes these are called .jpg, sometimes .thm, so maybe .tif on the
5D, dunno ... with the default settings RP wouldn't re-assemble files
as large as the RAW files for me though, I had to manually change this
to a higher number to get it to work ... can you check the file sizes,
for grins?

Thanks Bill. Worth a try but ... the files on the test card were all RAW

PhotoRescue, but it is not free. For that matter, neither is RescuePro.
It is "free" only with a SanDisk card, which is of course marked up
slightly to cover it.

1.0 is pretty old. Mine is version 3.0. The RescuePro website claims it
will handle both CRW and CR2 files, but does not say whether it can
handle 5D files. >> Stay informed about: Recovering Deleted Photos |

Ah, now I get you - yes, I can check the file size, I had already
downloaded them, this was only a test! The raw files are 13-15Mb, the
default limit on Rescue Pro was 5.something Mb, so you could be right.
Will check it out when I get home.
Many thanks, Bill.

Well, free in the sense that I had one from buying a SanDisc card last
year

Hm, I did wonder. Also, may matter that I re-labelled them as .CRW
instead of .CR2 as I should have. Will try it when I get home.
Thanks,

David, I *thought* I had 1.0 but I just opened Rescue Pro and I have
2.0.0.9 ... that worked for me for recovering either 10D or 1D Mark II
RAW files once I bumped up the max file size. I thought the disk that
came with the CF card said 1.0 so probably 2.0.0.9 was downloaded from
the SanDisk site ... you may have to downloaded version for it to
recognize 5D files but I think once you do this and change the max file
size it should work fine.

Richard,
Not sure I have a DOS file recovery program any more. Always used to
have one, but as Windows got more incomprehensible I guess I just gave
up! Guess I should have one for general use anyway.
You could be right about the TIFF bit though.
Thanks,

Try PC Inspector File Recovery, free at
http://www.pcinspector.de/smart_media_recovery/uk/welcome.htm
There are actually two programs, PCI File Recovery and PCI Smart
Recovery, which is the later one. Both are free, and both work on cards
from my 300D RAW shots.

Thanks, Colin. It looks like a trial version for which you have to pay
to continue using. Is this right? Does the trial actually let you save
any recovered files?

No, its freeware with a request for donations if you want. Yes, the
download is the full version, does allow saving.
The interface is not too intuitive, but it works. I have used it on
both hard drives and flash cards with success.
