The Canon A560 is $130 and excellent. My sister has the previous model
A550 and I can confirm that it's top-notch. Fits in a jeans pocket, large
LCD, reasonably fast shooting, intuitive controls, good image quality,
good movie mode with sound, and takes standard, cheap SD cards and AA
rechargeable batteries. (The minor downside for me is that it uses PTP
mode rather than UMS mode for USB file transfers, which is basically a
personal personal preference.)

Here are the recommended cameras from a widely-quoted pro photographer,
and the A560 is what he calls "the cheapest good camera": http://

A710is poor battery life - Hi, I'm playing with my new A710 but I'm really puzzled about the battery life of my AA Ni-MH. The camera displays the out of barrery message very soon. A test of which gives me still 2.6 V, that should be a good voltage. Current is good also (>5 Ah....

compact camera with best battery life - I've been looking for a compact camera with very long battery life, and so far it seems like the best ones are the Sony DSC-W30 and -W50. Is this correct, or is there something better that I've missed? (I've only been looking at the low-middle price..

Charging rate and battery life - I just bought some Duracel rechargable 2650 MAh NiMH batteries and a Duracell charger. The 2 Duracel chargers were 30min mn and 1 hr. Does this high speed charging shorten the life of batteries? Thanks Mike
