Archived from groups: rec>photo>digital (more info?)

I recently damaged my Nikon D70, which was uninsured. So I am looking
for a P&S in the $200 range. I also had a mini P&S, which was
impossible to use without camera shake. I don't need the compact size
of a mini. I also don't need 8x10 prints. Most of what I do is
electronic (viewed on 1024x768 computer monitors). Can anyone give a
couple of suggestions in this price range?

I would rather not be locked into only JPG format, but I suppose at
this price point, that might be what I will get.

Apologies to Regulars - I briefly searched google for recent posts like
this, but I quickly ran out of patience.

TIA - J.

I recently purchased a Kodak C330 with printer dock for our church - total
cost refurb from the kodak online store was about $200. BTW also got a
P850 for myself for $250.

If you bought it directly from Kodak, you got screwed. Much cheaper at
a discount place, like Big Lots!

Consider the Panasonic DMC-LZ3, which is a Leica in
disguise. Among its other features is an image stabilizer.
It has a 6X zoom, and the 5 MP lets you crop to the pixel
size you need, whuch is what camera-vendors call digital
zoom. I've had the camera for about 6 months, and I'm quite
pleased with it. The only thing I don't like is the lack of
san optical view finder, but that is increasingly common.
It is somewhat compensated by the ability to increase the
brightness of the LCD.

Yeah, I'd not let that be a deal breaker at that price point for sure.
Just convert to TIFF when you import to your computer.

We've had several $200 A series Canons around here and loved them (Have
a 640 now, a bit more, but great). This year I gifted my daughters
their first cameras and opted for a $90 and $185 Kodak. Sorry for not
knowing the models offhand, but I've been very impressed with the pics
they've been getting with these, especially the better one. I go from
looking at mine in the computer to hers and they hold up wel.

Hello, Ray:

For the original poster's benefit, it should be noted that the Kodak
P850 can shoot in RAW and TIFF, in addition to JPEG.

Hello, Ron:

Are you claiming that you've seen the Kodak P850 - or >any< brand-name
digicam, of comparable specifications - at Big Lots?

I certainly haven't!

It is a very nice camera, but much to large for my needs at 4.3x3.3x2.8
with the lens not extended. More on the prosumer (superzoom) range than
a regular compact P&S.

Hello, Ron:

Would you happen to recall the price(s), on the P850 and/or similar
models?
