I've jsut taken some RAW+jpeg with my Konica Minolta SLR for the first
time. I've got FastStone Image viewer which is meant to handle RAW but
it just ceases up (even with the jpegs, which isn't normal). Anyone
know of some other software I can download and test for RAW processing.
thanks
John

Googles picassa handles raw and is free
Gimp and UFRAW are also free and can handle most raw formats >> Stay informed about: RAW software |

You can download a trial copy of PictureWindow Pro. The latest version
processes most raw image files. PW Pro is a very good image editor
aimed more for photography than graphics art and is very fast and
memory efficient. I'm using it on an old LAN party box with only half
a gig and it doesn't choke on three hundred meg files.

If it's like mine it came with Dimage, which runs so slowly as to be
unusable.
Picassa is good for quickly sorting through your RAW images, you can
then call on something else with a load of options for tweaking the
ones you're really interested in. >> Stay informed about: RAW software |

RSE
http://www.pixmantec.com/products/rawshooter_essentials.asp
Note comment re Pixmantec takeover by Adobe - RSE won't be available
for long when Adobe Lightroom (post beta) ships.
You could also download the Lightroom Beta trial.
Unfortunately RSE seems far less of a resource hog than newer generation
RAW processing software. It worked fine on my PC with 512mb RAM, but I
have since increased to 1gb - which seems to be a practical minimum
these days. >> Stay informed about: RAW software |

Picasa, PainstShop Pro and IrfanView will all read most RAW formats (it differs
with each camera, since it's not really a "format" but just a data dump from the
camera's sensor). Picasa and IrfanView are free, so they don't cost anything to
test (and I recommend the latter as a general image viewer anyway).
Didn't your camera come with conversion software? If not, something should be
available from Konica. >> Stay informed about: RAW software |

Picasa sucks for processing or tweaking RAW images. It doesn't support very
many cameras either. If you like blotchy noisy images then Picasa is the way
to process them. If you like nice clean useful images then go with something
else.

Try http://www.silkypix.com
A Japanese RAW converter, very good, try before you buy.

Thanks for all the comments people. I just wondered - is 256mb RAM too
little for RAW processing? >> Stay informed about: RAW software |

256MB of RAM is just about enough to adequately support Windows XP by
itself. You want a minimum of 512MB, preferably 1GB.
