Archived from groups: rec>photo>digital (more info?)

Dear All,
I just opened my Nikon D 300 and shot some RAW ( Nikon NEF ) images and
uploaded to my Aperture Photo Management Program ( on Mac Pro). I was
shocked to see that Aperture does not recogonize NEF images. I later
shot in JPEG and aperture took it.
Can anybody help me in importing NEF into aperture i.e. any software
upgrade or any other other solution.

Very Disappointed.

aperture does not yet support nikon d300 images. apple generally adds
support for new cameras in system updates, and one is due any time
(macworld expo is next week, and 10.5.2 is likely to be released with
new hardware).

keep in mind that the camera has only been available for about six
weeks. it would be nice if support appeared sooner, but they probably
wanted to bundle several cameras in one update.

alternately, adobe lightroom supports the d300, as does nikon's own
software.

They use the *same* file structure. But it is indeed a
very flexible structure (based on TIFF), and allows them
to use different parameters with different cameras.

TIFF, JPEG, and PPM/PGM file formats all do much the
same thing, except that new parameter sets are now few
and far in between, hence you don't notice it the way you
do with the NEF format, where every few months 1 or 2
new sets are added.

It is inexplicable why Nikon calls all raw files from its cameras by the
..nef name when they are incompatible file structures.
Microsoft used to do the same thing with older versions of Office unable to
open Word and Excel files from newer versions of Office.
It is astounding that even this many years after the personal computer
revolution there is no such thing as a universal convention for naming
files. That says alot about the propeller heads who make these decisions and
their attitude toward users.

it's no different than canon or anyone else. every new camera has
something slightly different about it's raw file because the sensor is
a little different. in the case of the d300, the sensor is more than
just a little different from the d200.

how exactly could a particular version of software open a future format
that had not yet even been defined at the time the application was
originally written?

that would truly be a very neat trick.

or it says something about not understanding what's really going on.

If they used an open RAW format, such as Adobe DNG used by Leica,
Pentax, Ricoh, Casio and others, it wouldn't be a problem.

See http://www.openraw.org/

I believe the Open Source UFraw converter supports the D300.

dng is interesting, however, it is very bayer-centric. it doesn't
directly support foveon, and presumably it won't support other
co-located sensors of the future. so it isn't future proof at all.

and it's also interesting that the link you provide has an article that
says dng *isn't* a good idea:
<http://openraw.org/node/1482>

which is based on dcraw, which was updated to handle the d300.

dcraw will need to be updated to support the just announced sony a200
as well as the cameras from canon and pentax that are expected to be
announced in a few weeks, just like other software.

In fact, it is still a problem. You can convert a D300 NEF file to DNG,
for example, and Aperture will still not read it. This was true of the
last round of Canon releases, too. The fact is, Apple is very slow
updating their software for new cameras.

You can get Adobe's DNG converter for free, too.

Actually, your post says a lot about your attitude. There are only so
many three letter combinations. Probably all of them are used for one
purpose or another. We don't need a czar of filenames telling us what
to name our files.

Apple is very slow to update Aperture and iPhoto to read new cameras.
They will eventually get around to it. Some pros have stopped using
Aperture for this reason. They don't want to stop work for several
months just because they got a new camera and Apple hasn't updated
Aperture to understand it yet.

Aperture 2.0 has been promised for nearly two years now. If they
haven't got it fixed by MacWorld, I am afraid I will have no choice but
to switch to LightRoom. I really like Aperture, but I need software
that keeps up with me.

aperture 1.0 was first released just over two years ago, in october,
2005.

i guess if the release of the 1.0 version evokes an instant promise of
an imminent 2.0 release, then yes, they 'promised' it. however, in the
past two years, apple updated the 1.0 version several times, including
to 1.1 a month or two after its initial release and a fairly big update
to version 1.5 last year, to its current 1.5.6 release, all of which
were completely free.

there's really nothing unusual about its release schedule.

The OS X 10.5.2 update should be released soon. Perhaps it will at last
have D3 and D300 support.
