Why isn't the Sony DSC R1 showing up in Best Buy yet? It is in their
price range, they carry Sony, and it is the best Sony camera currently
available. So what's the problem?

Because the average BB buyer is looking for a $300 little silver
rectangle and not a huge black monster that costs $1000? Smile

I don't know why--I spent a couple hours last weekend at a SonyStyle Store,
in International Plaza, who ALSO didn't have any in stock (except for the
floor sample) and played with it for quite a bit.

Mine was ordered from Amazon this week and I should have it Monday!

Mark (also in the Tampa area obviously)

No. In my OP I said that it is in their price range. They sell the Canon
20D and Rebel XT, Nikon D100 and D50, and they used to carry the Sony 828.

I initially looked at the R1, before getting the Lumix FZ30. It looks like a
really nice camera but does it seem overpriced? Or am I missing something?

They are NOT the same. The sensor in the R1 is close to the size of many
dSLRs, so the picture quality is very good and has good low light (high
ISO) performance. However, when comparing R1 to dSLRs, it's not as fast
and you're being limited by the fix lens. Yes, you could add
teleconverter and wide angle converter to R1 but it would cost a fortune
and become much bulkier. The R1 doesn't have lens stabilizer like the
FZ30 or dSLR with [pricey] IS lenses.

It could have come down to investment versus return. I doubt Sony
allows for much margin for retailers. Maybe the D200 means 4x the net
income?
