The Olympus E-1 rivals my Leicas for quietness. It is a very well made
camera, though about 3 years old. Olympus was originally charging $2K
for these but more recently they have dropped into the $600 range. Only
5 mp and is in the 4/3 category. The person I share my office with has
one, an impressive camera and very quiet.

Sorry to hear that about SLRs.
Are some SLRs more quiet than others?

Yes, and some elephants are smaller than others.
SLRs are by their very nature more noisy that P&S cameras. The quieter
SLRs are still noisier than the P&S variety.
If you want a quiet camera for candids, I think you want a small,
non-intrusive P&S; a SLR will make most people stop acting natural.
Good luck!

Any non-SLR can (normally) be made fully silent,
since there's no mirror or (mechanical)
shutter.

BTW, with a 100mm (35mm equivalent) zoom
lens, you can often be far enough away
from the subject that noise is less
of an issue anyway.
Ditto for waist level viewfinder;
much less obtrusive in use.
Oh, and DON'T use flash!

Flash would be a give-a-way.

Many of the P&S models are very quiet if you turn-off
any annoying beeps. However, SLRs are by their very
nature noisey. You have to get that mirror out of the way
somehow.

So would the focus-assist lamp provided in some P&S cameras.
I use a Panasonic LX1; fully quiet, f-a can be turned off, up to 112
mm equivalent long end of a 28-mm-to zoom. No viewfinder.

Sure some SLRs are quieter than others, but none are
totally quiet like you could achieve with a P&S.
Shooting pictures with an SLR from a distance using a
telephoto does help reduce the problem. I find that not
many people like having a camera stuck in their face
anyway.

The Sony R1 while not being an SLR has a big APS-sized sensor and is
quiet, because it has no mirror.

With my Panasonic FZ30 I can shoot at over 600mm (35mm equivalent) at 3mp,
and with the image stabilization, without a tripod. It's great for candid
shots. >> Stay informed about: Quiet digital camera? |

As others have said, any non-SLR can be configured to be virtually silent.
One of the few P&S cameras around with swivelling LCD screens (or bodies)
would be ideal for candids - I use a Coolpix 995.
To show how close you *can* get without being noticed, see
http://mykoalabear.netfirms.com/slides/Thumb%20Sucker.htm This was taken at
a distance of about 500mm!

Hello, John:
Are these "perfectly quite" Olympus digicams really SLR types, or are
they of the so-called "ZLR" (Zoom Lens Reflex) variety?
The modern ZLR features an EVF (electronic viewfinder), instead of a
DSLR's rackety reflex mechanism, which utilizes mirrors or prisms. This
accounts for an EVF-based ZLR's silent operation, when its sounds are
turned off.
I own two such (Kodak "super zoom") cameras, a DX6490 and a P850.
Cordially,
