I have old slides up to 60 yrs old. After scanning I now just increase
Saturation to add color to those that faded, but see there are programs
for restoring faded films. Do these programs do a better job of
restoring faded films than just adding saturation. Can a nearly
completely faded to clear slide be made good.

I've recently scanned some 50-year-old slides. Many of them
had faded so that the only color visible to the eye was red.
My scanner, Epson 3490, has fade correction in its
software, and there is also fade correction in Paint Shop
Pro. PSP allows for control of the image restoration, but
the scanner's software does it more rapidly. The color
wasn't restored perfectly, but I was surprised that it
worked at all. For a few of the images, there were other
processes in PSP that gave some more improvement. And you
should be ready to use the scanner software or an image
editor for other corrections, such as removing dust specks.

The best is probably Applied Science Fiction's "ROC" (reconstruction
of Color).

In general, yes.

Probably not. But you can download a free trial version of ROC to find
out before you buy.

Is this the program that is now owned and distributed (USA) by Kodak?

If they're important enough, I'd suggest experimenting with all that
you have and see what works best. I recently scanned in some slides
taken from 1940-48 and color was greatly improved using AutoLevels,
Levels (playing with the controls) and some other controls. A few
turned out better using GraphicConverter, sometimes using its white
balance correction. I was fortunate though in that the original scans,
before correction, were reasonable -- not at all like the "red only"
comment earlier. (These were Kodachromes.) While I would have been
happy to have these ancient pictures even in the original scan, the
vividness of the corrected pictures blew me away. Some looked like they
were taken yesterday!

As I understand it, the color dyes fade, but they do not all fade at the
same rate.

I've had very good results with Digital ROC, which is available both on the
slide scanner itself or as a plug-in for PhotoShop.

Adding saturation is not the answer, as it does not restore the original
color balance.

Cleaning slides - Can slides be cleaned with lens cleaning fluid or anything like denatured alcohol or windex. Should a cotton swab or rag be used.
