Post subject: Problem Printing with Epson 2400

Hello folks, TIA if you can help. I have a new Epson Stylus Photo R2400.
PC, USB 1 connection, Windows XP, current maintenance and current Epson
drivers. The printer is loaded with the Matte Black ink cartridge. The
good news is that its printing on all kinds of matte paper, especially black
and white, is gorgeous. The bad news is that it only wants to print from
Photoshop. When I click the little printer icon to print text out of an
application, the printer whirrs a few times then stops without feeding any
paper or producing any output. If I watch the printer window, I see the
print job getting queued up, then dequeued as it is sent to the printer.
All the printer preferences are set to the defaults.
Aside from this issue, it's a very good machine. I upgraded from the 1280.
I like the colors better on the 2400 and I like the B&W much better. it's
also much faster than the 1280 for larger pictures.

Make sure it is set as the default printer.

Here are a couple things to try.
1. The driver probably has an option to print to a file. Do this
for both the Photoshop "picture" as well as the text output from
another app. Examining the beginning of the files (you might have
to use a binary/hex viewer) might provide a clue.
2. Perhaps the text-printing app. isn't working because the printer
is configured with the Matte Black cartridge, and that can't be used
for simple text as it appears to be a non-black "color" ink to the
printer? If this is the problem, using the "text" app., try
changing the text's color to dark blue, red or purple (any color,

Thank you to all who offered a reply. I can't say why it worked, but here
is what I did to circumvent the problem: Reinstall the drivers, power-off
and power-on everything in the room. Now it prints as expected on all media
from all applications. See dictionary.com for idiopathic.
Aside from this relatively-easy-to-resolve issue, the Epson 2400 is a good
machine. I have made some prints that are startlingly high quality, both on
matte and glossy paper, and the Epson prints are indistinguishable from the
best photographic prints I have ever entered into competition.
