Hi group

I use CS2 in Windows XP and an hp8750 (A3+ sized printer) - now printing
B&W, setting everything to Adobe RGB 98 (camera = D70 set to adobe space, so
is CS2 mode, so is printer profile) my prints come out slightly darker than
screen. I even calibrated my Sony TFT monitor with the hp/gretamacbeth
calibration device that came free with the printer. (it has saved a monitor
profile).

I would like to know how I can lighten my prints slightly ! I am still
struggling to get the same print as I see on my monitor. It's not a million
miles away, but it is a little darker than what I see on screen !

Thanks for your help, whoever the guru is who can answer my question !

Cheers,
Roland Herrera

One way is to tune your monitor: turn down the contrast/brightness, after
calibrating, incrementally and create test strips until wysiwyg. TFT/LCD etc
monitors are brighter than crt/paper.

BUT that is not how Colour Management works.

Print Space in Photoshop should - -

(A) be set to "Let PS determine Colour" and you then select the Printer
Profile, (Not Adobe RGB), with the Printer Driver set to No Colour
Management

or

(B) be set to "Let Printer determine Colour" if the Printer Driver will
then be selecting its Profile and doing the colour management.

I can't advise which way it should be done, because I don't know how the HP
& the Gretag Macbeth are meant to work together, but your documentation
should tell you.

Selecting Adobe RGB as the Print space in (A) is almost the same as "Let
Printer Determine Colours".

You should also be selecting the Printer Profile in "View" > "Proof
Colours", which will then give you a closer approximation to the finished
Print.

What you see on screen, without Proof, does NOT make any allowance for the
Printer or Paper.

Are you using an HP paper, the printer is calibrated for HP paper.
Other papers may take more or less ink, have different color gamuts,
this is what profiling is for. See if the calibration you did for your
monitor is the file windows is using for its monitor profile, make sure
monitor profiling is turned on.
It is kicking all you have done out, but you can lighten your files in
photoshop, I have to do this with B&W files I send to an outside
printer, color files are OK, just save the files as printing files. I'm
not sure what adjustments the HP printer driver has (Epson has alot),
the two HP I work with don't have much, but they aren't photo printers.
If you can establish a curve in PSCS that works for your files, then
just set this curve up as an action and run it before you print.
I'd suggest getting a pack of HP paper similar to what you want to use
and work from there.
