Hi, I need to buy an inkjet MFD (printing and scanning) for home printing.
I print mainly text business documents and occasional color photos.
My last three printers have been HP MFD inkjet devices and the last two I
dumped because of paper jams and having to replace inkjetr cartridges that
weren't empty. The reviews for the canon pixma mp600 and canon pixma 530
(I like the 530 for the ADP and the ability to scan legal size documents)
are very good at pcworld and cnet. A problem I have w/ inkjets is I may go
two weeks w/o printing and I"m concerned about ink drying out and the print
heads becoming clogged.
Thanks,
Mike >> Stay informed about: Printer Recommendation? |

Never had "ink drying out problem" with my two Canon 5 tank printers.

Maybe you should widen your choices. You say InkJet, but how about
color Laser?
I don't do a lot of photo printing and if I want a really good print I
have it done professionally, not inkjet.
I have a color laser and have found it far superior overall for my
needs. Far less troublesome. When I next need to replace that printer or
my scanner, it will be a multipurpose color laser unit with network
capability. While those units are a little pricey the price is well worth
it to me.
Check out how well some of today's lasers do.

As most of your printing seems to be black and white, have you
considered getting a low-cost laser printer and a separate low-cost
color inkjet? I personally have an HP 1020, which is usually available
for $100 US or less and a Canon iP6700 (which cost me more than to
1020). There is a plethora of low-price inkjets that might take care of
your color needs. This approach, though, doesn't take care of scanning.
I have a separate scanner (Canon) that I bought mainly for its ability
to scan my old slides, but it comes in handy for my very occasional
scanning now that I've finished my slide-scanning project. The downside
of my approach is that the space required for two printers and a scanner
might be more than you have available, but it has been very satisfactory
for me. A final thought: my last two IJs before the Canon were HPs,
which jammed occasionally and both of which died early because of
mechanical problems. The HP 1020 has been very good and reliable, but
before it I had a 5L that had terrible jamming problems. Oops! a really
final thought: my Canon 6700 sometimes goes two or three weeks between
used and I've had no ink-flow problems with it. Good luch with your search.

I've heard that in order to prevent Clogged Heads was to leave the Printer
turned on for HP Ink Jets.
I've had HP Ink Jet Printers and they had issues with Clogged Heads, I have
an Epson now, I turn it on only when I need to use it, no Clogged Heads!

I would recommend one of the sub $100 laser printers (Brother and Samsung
make good ones) for your 'text business documents' - cost of consumables
is MUCH lower than inkjet. I've been using the original cartridge in my
Brother HL1440 for about two years now - and 'clogging' is absolutely not
a problem.
As I eschew 'all-in-ones' I can't offer much recommendation there except
to note that the fairly new Kodak units claim an operating cost about 1/2
the competition. >> Stay informed about: Printer Recommendation? |

I found that a problem with Epsons and switched to a Canon Pixma. End of
problem.

True, HP is not what is used to be. I suppose I am lucky with the
printer/scanner I now use every day. About 20 pages printed every day
for about 2 years. Carts are really cheap also.

It's not all that much of a problem as the refill places have ways
around it.
I usually go to Cartridge World where they know how to get around the
date issue. Walgreens is cheaper, but they can't always get the refill
to work.
Of course for printing photos you should be sending them out to the
local Costco, Wal-Mart, Walgreens, etc., as it's cheaper than printing
yourself, and the quality and longevity are far longer.
One Costco now sells some of the Rhinotek remanufactured cartridges,
including the ones I need, 2 for $39 for color, and they sometimes have
a $3 discount on the two-pack. >> Stay informed about: Printer Recommendation? |

I have very limited esk top space. I considered a low cost laser which I
still may buy but for right now I'm thinking IJ/scanner. I've givienn up on
the HP IJ and the 5L feed problem I know well.
