You might...but I've never been to Africa, and don't know when I'll be
back... Smile
In fact, it had a lot to do with why I'm buying the 500 at this particular
time (ordered it today).

Wow! -Made-to-order backage confirmation! Smile
Your timing is good.

I'll be itching for a trip to Alaska now that I won't be merely wishing for
the 500+.
Thanks again, Bill.

Seriously consider the Kinesis stuff. Not only is it excellent carry-
on, but it's just excellent in the field.

http://kgear.com/

I use their large lens pouch for the 500/4, and have various side
pouches for the body and some smaller lenses. The entire setup can be
quickly taken apart and individual items jammed -- even the 500/4 --
into even the tiny overheads on commuter jets or turbo-props. It's
even taken a ride on a twin-otter.

I'm similar, except I don't bother with the computer, or a 24-105.
The smaller lenses are checked with the tripod etc. When I enter the
plane, on my back and hips are:

500/4 (large pouch, on back)
300/4 (hip)
180/3.5 (hip)
17-35/2.8 (pouch attached to 500/4 pouch)
1D2 (about to become a 1D3) (ditto)
1.4x and 2x (ditto)
Canon 15x50 IS binoculars

I have the backup HDD's and other items (e.g., flashes) in my vest.
The rest is checked in a nondescript duffel, with optics inside lens
pouches and carefully wrapped and re-wrapped. The above are also
carefully packed, with the 500/4's hood in the "stowed" position so to
speak (this gives lots of room for the binoculars). When you arrive,
you simply unpack the 500/4, flip hood around and go into "working
mode": the Kinesis large-lens pouch can hold the 500/4 with the hood
in the "shooting position".

So far I've had no problem, as the entire rig isn't much larger than a
daypack. The added flexibility has proven useful on one occasion when
dealing with airline personnel: had I been using a monolithic bag
then, it would probably have been checked against my wishes. But
note: I've never been to Europe nor Africa. And reading some of the
hassles you have to endure, I doubt I ever will...

Interesting - you mirror my feelings about travelling to the USA! There
comes a limit to the indignity one is expected to tolerate.

It ain't a picnic for us USians either... I've ended up
with my carry-on camera stuff spread all over a table while
holding my shoes in one hand and my pants up with the other.

Meanwhile I'm afraid to check the camera gear for fear that bad
guys might steal it.

There's never security where it is needed.

Hi Bill

The new consultation period is until December 07 with May 08 the date
for introduction of any common rules. The rules are actually secret
and not published in the EU Regulation - the poor citizen has to rely
on what their government chooses to interpret the rule as!

While London is obviously the main connecting point for international
flights, be aware that the one bag limit is a UK government policy
implemented at all UK airports. I've just returned from the US and
the Delta gate staff at Manchester made a special announcement about
the one bag limit to warn returning US passengers.

Enjoy Paris.

Just another suggestion, take a look at the Tamrac 613/Super Pro 13
http://www.tamrac.com/613.htm

This is 21x13x11 and can hold most everything you have in mind.

Amsterdam is the better Euro connect with a hotel in the terminal to
help deal with jetlag/layover issues prior to making your African
connection. Or just spend a day or two in Amsterdam (a much better value
than London.)
If you must fly into London for what ever reason. Make your connection
out through Paris, Amsterdam or Frankfurt. Cross the channel via ferry,
hovercraft or train and not worry about the quaint Heathrow outbound
restrictions.
Good luck,

I'm flying through Paris, luckily...
I looked at your link... -A 500mm f4 L fits in there??

The 500mm might be a tight fit. I have used it with an 80-400 VR +
collar, 12-24, 24-120 VR, 50mm 1.4, 70-300G, SB-800 AF Speedlight,
Powerbook, D70, D200, spare batteries, one charger, powersupply and some
thrown in stuff.
There is the larger 614 http://www.tamrac.com/614.htm but this might be
a gamble size wise, unless you try to pass that off as your extra
personal item.
I just hope you find a workable solution soon.
Good luck,

See the second picture down on this page, and you'll see why I highly doubt
the 500 f4 will fit:

OK. I have a feeling you might just have to use a LowePro large lens
case as your extra bag and you should get your laptop and everything
else into the 613. Or have a willing traveling equipment bearer. Another
thought might be, if you are going via South Africa, to rent a big lens
there. Try http://www.creationphotography.co.za/lensrentals.html
