Hey it's whatever works for you.I'm not rabid anti-MS or
pro-Linux.Everybody should look at alternatives once in a while, and I
found that 90% of my pc use can be done in Linux. Those that have apps
that can't be transfered should stick with MS.Gimp and UFraw seem to
work better in Linux and I use them a lot besides PSP.One thing I have
to keep MS for is my blood glucose meter readings. No Linux drivers to
upload the readings to keep track of my diabetes. To me it's just a
matter of playing to see what else is available.(Lightzone is free for
Linux,$250 for Windows)

I was just looking at Elements 5 this afternoon and almost purchased it.
The package didn't mention RAW files and thats where I would like to
explore. Does anybody know if Elements can handle RAW? Also, I am curious
does Elements 5 also have Levels like the old Photoshop 7??

I have been using my friends old Photoshop 7 and am able to get it to use
RAW, the Nikon NEF files. Work on them and save them as TIFF without any
problems at all.

Elements 6 also came with Premier Elements and the double package was for
150 at Staples. I dont intend to edit Videos so I dont think I have any use
for the whole package. I didn't see Elements 6 as a stand alone only
version 5 for $89.

I will be using the Photo Editor for the pics from my Nikon D80 and I'm
interested in getting used to the RAW. Does anybody have any info on this??
IMHO, CS3 is way over priced and after my expense last weekend of my brand
new Nikon I cant see spending that much money.

I wont be updating to Vista for a long time if ever. I am using XP SP2 and
I have no problems with anything I run. LOL

Try PhotoLine 32 instead www.pl32.net It's not crippled to a 16-bit math
platform like PhotoShop, has full Lanczos8 resampling for all rotations and
resizings so you aren't blurring fine details with bicubic methods. It also
reads any RAW format I've ever thrown at it. Even cameras that aren't listed as
supported and new or unknown RAW formats that no other program can open.

The new version 14 was just put up with lots of useful new tools. Including 34
different adjustment-layer (working layer) types. Another new demosaicing
algorithm for RAW imports called PPG. It seems to pull out slightly more detail
with less aliasing problems, but the AHD or VNG interpolation options seem
better on some things. The new "Image Optimize" tool for adjusting the gamma of
lights and shadows does some pretty nice things. They did a really nice job on
revamping their Curves (CLUT) tool. PhotoLine 32 has done more and done it
better than any version of PhotoShop for the last 5 years.

John,
I have PE 3.0 on a Mac. It handles RAW, so I presume later versions do
too. I had to download something to make PE see my Olympus RAW files. PE
has levels, don't know if it's the same as old Photoshop.
