A couple of things ... Photoshop's Levels dialogue manipulates midtones but
PhotoLine's Histogram Correction doesn't. How would you simply and directly
adjust the midtones of the histogram with PhotoLine.
I guess you could use CLUT, but since it uses predefined curves it doesn't
seem to have the immediate flexibility of Photoshop's Levels or Curves.
I can't find an equivalent for Photoshop's Crop Tool, allowing you to
preview any arbitrary width, height, and rotation, just like on an enlarger.
Apart from those quick and powerful functions that I use on every photo, it
looks like a decent application. >> Stay informed about: Photo editing software |

You probably will want a RAW file conversion program like Nikon
Capture or Bibble Pro. They allow you to make major adjustments to
exposure, white balance, sharpening and noise reduction. Then you can
add something like Corel Paint Shop Pro XI, Photoshop Elements or the
GIMP for editing the image. >> Stay informed about: Photo editing software |

I could not even download the trial version of Nikon Capture XN as it would
not mount but I guess it did manage to download the anti-thieft software
because when I finally managed to get the CD of Nikon Capture XN, Nikon's
anti-thieft software would not allow me to open the software installed from
the CD. Told me my 15 day trial period was over.
Last I heard from Nikon was that there was nothing they could do to help me
get the free 15 day trial. I was also informed that that anti-thieft software
(what is it called, malware, spyware???) is on my computer and can not be
erased even if I format the drive. When I questioned this further I was told
technical support could not help me and to contact Nikon, Inc. for an answer.
What is really sad about this whole incident is that I really liked Nikon
Capture. I found it easy to use and a pretty good all around program. I
bought Adobe LightRoom in place of Nikon Capture but do not like that at all
but then I do not think they were supposed to do the same things??
What do you all think of Bibble?

A colleague at work swears by Picasa, a freebie from Google. After an
(admittedly brief) trial, I decided I like Digital Photo Professional, which
came with my Canon XTi, better. But I doubt the latter would read your Nikon
RAW files.
Digital Photo Professional doesn't have a lot of functionality, but what it
does do it does well. For example, it has an excellent cropping tool that
makes it easy to move and resize the window while maintaining a preset aspect
ratio. It also lets you set the ambient color temperature on RAW mode images
and increase brightness without losing contrast.
I'm a bit surprised to hear that Paint Shop Pro doesn't support Nikon RAW
mode. Are you sure there isn't a plugin available somewhere?

Actually, Picasa does support Nikon RAW files (and many others):
<http://picasa.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=44138&query=raw&topic=&type=>.
However, you won't see any edits from Capture NX unless you only use the
Base Adjustments area (this problem is specific to NX and not Picasa).
However, Capture 4 should work fine with Picasa.

I use photoshop 7 at work, PSP X at home. I'm not what you'd call an
advanced user, but both suffice for what I want to do. I like PSP X's
photo correction options, and it reads my raw *ist files with no
problems. I've downloaded GIMP, but havent used it enough to give an
accurate review. >> Stay informed about: Photo editing software |

Is there a plug-in for Canon 30D raw files?
I have Paint Shop Pro versions 8,9, and 10 and they don't open my raw files.
I have also been using the free software provided by Canon, DPP, and
would be mightily unhappy if I'd paid for a Nikon and wasn't provided
with software to handle Nikon raw.

I think they need to go back to the drawing board and put the powerful
functions where you can find them (and that includes showing them in the
help).
So how do you adjust the midtones in the levels?

Ah, I get it - you insult the Photoshop users so that they won't look at
your application, and you insult those who are gullible enought to try your
application so that they stick with Photoshop. Nice job of promoting
Photoshop. Very clever. Ok, I'll stick with Photoshop. Thanks. >> Stay informed about: Photo editing software |

Yes, I'm sure. It's Digital Photo Professional, a freebie with my Rebel XTi,
that I suspect doesn't handle Nikon RAW. Sorry if I didn't make that clear.
