I would recommend the latest version of Adobe PhotoShop Elements.
It is very powerful, and becomes more user friendly with each newer edition.

I would suggest you start by evaluating several free photo editing
programs - there is a good chance that one or more of them may do what you
need without a large cash outlay.

I would suggest GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) and to convert raw
files, ufraw - those are what I use.

The GIMP and UFRAW are an excellent choice. Just be
sure to acquire the recently released 2.4 version of
GIMP rather than the older 2.2 version.

http://ufraw.sourceforge.net

Another program that might be very handy is /exiftool/,
which is a program that reads (and writes) EXIF data in
image files.

I used to be a big Paint Shop Pro fan. I currently use it. But I just
read in the paper this morning that Corel is closing their local
office, the digital imaging products office, which was responsible for
PSP (it is the old Jasc bunch) and laying off everyone. I think I
will switch over to Photoshop Elements now. I use Premiere Elements
for video, and really like it. Friends I know swear by Elements so
when I am ready for something new it will be PS Elements even if Corel
does introduce a new version of PSP.

First of all you need image descriptions which tell you the details
after some years. Here IPTC metadata is the choice. Take Thumbsplus and
you have all in one.

Sorry to hear that. I've been using PSP since before digital photography
was an issue, going back to version 3, as I recall. I consider the last
release (11) as a backward step.

Go here and check out these lists that compare many dozens of them.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_raster_graphics_editors

There are several that are excellent and you don't need to pay Adobe's prices
for PhotoShop to get the same capabilities.

GIMP, it's free.

PhotoLine 32, does more and does it better than PhotoShop ever will.

Paint Shop Pro, excellent for it's GUI and intuitive use, good for an advanced
editor, but PSP has been going down in quality and more bugginess the longer
that Corel tinkers with it, ever since they bought it from Jasc. Version 9 is
more than you'll ever need if you are only going to edit JPG files with it since
it's an 8 bit platform. PSP didn't add in support for 16-bit file types until
10, and then only partially supported in some editing tools.

Zoner Photo Studio Enterprise, pricey but just a notch above PSP in capabilities
and just below PhotoLine 32.

Canvas X, pricey but an extremely advanced editor, desktop publishing, and
layout editor. Extremely steep learning curve for all it can do.

Serif Photo Plus 11, excellent editor that has some nicer features than Paint
Shop Pro, and some not as well implemented. It could use some improvement on its
curve tool for example. It's built-in "knock-out" utility (to remove, isolate,
or copy) subjects from complex backgrounds) is implemented very well.

Ulead Photo Studio, it used to be nice, but just like Paint Shop Pro, Corel
bought that too and trashed it. It has some extensive preset frame, effects, and
animation libraries for people that like one-button effects.

Go over that list on the link above, you'll be sure to find something in your
price-range. From free to as much as you want to pay.

Avoid Adobe anything. They're still running on a 16-bit math platform, even CS3
is still 16-bit math. No better than a Windows 1.0 program. Sad but true.

Sorry to hear that. Not a good time of year for such news. I have the V3
disks and manual. Perhaps even earlier.

There is a 12 as well, but time to move on, as you say.

Cheers,
David

You can try Gimp. I think it's very non-intuitive. 2.4 is a little
better for cropping, the previous version couldn't be more archaic for a
very simple function. It's not enough for a program to be capable (Gimp
is), it has to be comfortable to use.
You can pick up PSP 9 for $9.95 + $3.95 postage via Amazon.com. It's an
excellent program. I've never used Elements, my understanding is it's
very good plus you'll find lot's of books on both that and PS in your
local library. I'm a great believer in sitting down with a good manual
rather than pecking around trying to figure out how things work. Much of
the stuff for PS should be applicable to Elements. Actually with a
little adjustment same is true for PSP, it's technique you're learning
and all the higher level programs provide similar functions.

As I posted earlier, I got PSP 9 for a give away price. The various PSP
groups seem to feel that was about a good a release as any. If I had to
buy something at the normal price, I would get Elements based on the
extensive documentation available.
However, I do have a question for you folks. If you have a working copy
of PSP running on your system, why does it matter what Corel does. Just
keep on using what you've got. A lot of people are using much earlier
versions. I liked 7, but 9 has added features I regard as much needed,
like cropping to a fixed ratio and better one step fixing. Another very
easy to use package is PhotoPlus from Serif, however, it doesn't seem to
be that well known.

Well, a bit off-topic, but I, for one, appreciated the interaction with
the programmers and managers you used to get on their support forums. You
felt you got to know the people, and I know of many features which made it
into the program through our exchanges.

I feel sad that some of those folk have been given the boot. So, yes, it
/does/ matter to me, and it will likely influence my decision to upgrade.

Cheers,
David

I agree. I struggled with The Gimp for a fairly long time, and finally
just gave up on it -- took way too much time and effort to do pretty
basic tasks.

I second those motions. Elements 6 is excellent, if a bit sluggish.
