Archived from groups: rec>photo>digital (more info?)

Just got a new camera and was trying to upgrade my Photoshop software
to CS2 to process the RAW pics. Discovered after downloading the
purchase that CS2 doesn't support my camera.... so I immediately
called to cancel the purchase. Too late... charge was in progress
when I called, was told to call back in the evening. Called back and
it took about 30 minutes of intense research (they couldn't find the
case #) to get information about my return. Adobe sent me forms... I
sent forms in and I get a response that they don't have a "return
case" set up... I need to call customer service AGAIN and that my
money wouldn't be returned for 1-2 billing cycles. Huh.

Alright... I'm done dealing with Adobe... no more of this nonsense.
Any other photo editing software for doing RAW images... maybe a
company that actually has good customer relations?

Yeah, I've got Elements 2.0... think I'll just stick with that. NOT
going to spend any more money on Adobe, just don't like the feeling of
supporting BAD company.

As ugly as your experience has been, I wouldn't give up on CS2 (or CS3)
too soon, as a digital darkroom tool few of the other offerings will
give you all that CS2/3 will.
Adobe works on ACR RAW updates all the time to match new camera
manufacturers RAW individual formats which change with each offering
without regard to software compatibility. (They all need to standardize
on something like DNG)
Go to http://www.dpreview.com/news/0611/06110101adobecr36.asp or
http://www.dpreview.com/news/0610/06100601acr36beta.asp for current news
and you might find your new camera listed. If not it will be there soon.

If you don't want to spend all the $$$ on CS2 then consider PhotoShop
Elements with updated ACR (and DNG converter)

Getting the Nikon D40... should arrive anytime now. Decided on this
kit since it accepts my 20+ year old lenses (although sacrificing the
autofocus). Almost decided on the Canon EOS 20D, but just didn't want
to spend that much on body quite yet... rather spend my money building
a new quiver of quality lenses.... market for digital bodies will only
get better & cheaper in time, but good optics will always be good and
price remain about the same.

Cool your jets, brand new camera, ACR will be updated for it, takes
6-8 weeks. Nikon wants you to buy Capture NX, which isn't a bad thing.
But most folks feel they need Photoshop too. You can convert to DNG
format in the mean time, or get to know your camera by shooting jpegs.
Photoshop is still the best editor.

Thanks Ray... that's precisely what I am looking for. JAlbum is like
that too... best software support I've ever experienced... ever...
great program too, and it's free. I gave a good chunk of money to
support them just because they're doing such a great job and have such
a great product.

Well now... why didn't Adobe customer support tell me about this?
Dang... if I had only known. This is how you can tell a good company
from a bad company.... by the lack of information customer service has
about their own product.... not to mention the long complicated
process of reaching them and making returns

Sorry Adobe.. you've lost a loyal customer here.

I don't use raw, but posts in this group indicate you can get raw
conversion software independent of the editor. I use PhotoPlus for which
a raw converter plug-in might be available. It's really quite a good and
easy to use package.
Then there is Elements (unless you are so turned off Adobe). PSP is good
and I'm sure someone will mention The Gimp, I gave up on trying to use that.

Would you care to indicate what camera you have that RAW isn't supported for?

It would be helpful to know this so as to give you good advice on a choice of
software.

<Sigh>The same happened to me...I am running win2k and bought age of empires
3...on the package was printed "windows XP"and didn't work of course...got a
full refund, although I had opened the package...Then bought pinnacle video
studio...also didn't support win 2k...no refund.Hopefully my firewire card
came with ulead studio.

I'd recommend you pinnacle studio-it costs 50 euros, and, is, like elements.

Because customer support is not tech support. They're just clerks.

I think you'll find that virtually all the raw processing software
takes some time to catch up, not just Adobe.
