Can anyone recommend any good and some what cheap photo printers that
produce good photos? For the first time I tried printing my own pictures I
took with my 2.1 m. pix camera. I used the cheap printer that came with the
Dell I got over Christmas time. I used a full sized black cartridge but
also used the miniature color introductory cartridge that came with printer.
I got horrible results. First I tried printing a picture the size of a
whole piece of paper. After one third of the picture was printed I started
seeing a big streak up and down the picture. Then another streak was
printed. I then tried printing a smaller picture the size of a postcard and
again there was a vertical streak in the picture. Also, besides the
streaks, I was not happy with the rest of the picture.
On the other hand, I took my memory card up to my brothers house and he
stuck it in his portably printer. He printed out two 6 x 4 picks that look
as good as you get from the photo shops. His portable printer only prints 6
x 4 picks tho. Also, it took forever for my cheap Dell printer to print my
two picks.
Anyway, I want something under $200.00 (preferable around $100.00) that
can print picks up to the size of a piece of paper. I at least want to
print decent picks half the size of a regular piece of paper. Any
recommendations?
Also, I read on another group something about archival ink? I was
looking at a nice Canon photo printer on amazon.com but would the pictures I
print start to fade in one or two years? What do I need to know about this
subject?
Much Thanks! >> Stay informed about: Photo Printer Recommendations? |

I second any Canon IPxxxx that uses separate cartridges for each
color--I have an IP4000 which is fantastic!

Epson R220. Or Epson Picture Mate if you just want 4x6. If you want to spend
money and be able to do large sizes then the Epson R1800 or the R2400.
Canon's are good I have an i9100 and still use it even with my Epson R2400.
I also had an Epson R200 (the model before the 220) and it is a very nice
printer for the $99 I paid for it.

I was looking at a Canon PIXMA iP6000D for $90.00 on amazon.com. It
takes six ink cartridges or whatever. I am not too familiar with printers
besides the standard blank ink cartridge and color ink cartridge printers.
But what about picture fade with a printer like the Canon IP600D or similar
printer? >> Stay informed about: Photo Printer Recommendations? |

Canon's in general are not known as archival printers. I know the Pixma are
supposed to be better that say the i9100, etc. But, they are not rated as
long as say Epson. HP for the most part is the same way. However, that is
changing. Both HP and Canon are or have released longer print life printers.
I know Epson is constantly rated the highest for print quality and lesser
for their speed. But since print quality seems to be what's important...
Also, Epson has a better selection of papers.

I bought a Canon IP3000. $20 after rebates and such! Prints NICELY.
Hint: You can use COSTCO (Kirkland) high glossy photo paper with it.

Epson R220. It uses dye-based cartridges but there is also a great
deal of after market support for very high quality B&W and Pigment
inksets, ICC profiles etc. for this model. If you don't go over 8x10
you can get professional results from this printer for 99 bucks
everywhere. Lot's of places sell them for 50 USD or even give-aways
with rebates when buying other equipment. Worth shopping or pick it up
anywhere for the 99. I have one set-up for B&W and one set-up for
color. Absolutely no complaints. I also have 2 sets of original Epson
dye cartridges still in the vacuum packaging if anyone is interested. >> Stay informed about: Photo Printer Recommendations? |

I just bought the IP4200, and it's superb. Photos look very realistic
indeed, and with the newer models you get the Chromalife100 inks (the
printouts should last 100 years if stored correctly).
I weighed up the differences between the 4200 and the 5200, and for the
differences, it didn't seem worth bothering with the extra cost. The
5200 does have slightly better resolution, but most reviews I read
couldn't tell the difference. Apart from that the 5200 is slightly
faster and uses slightly more ink from the same carts as the 4200.

The very newest models now use their ChromaLife100 inks, which are
supposed to make the prints last up to 100 years (is stored correctly of
course). If this is correct, it should make them an excellent archival
printer. Of course, who's going to be around to prove or disprove the
claim?

Hi.
A couple of points the other posters seem to have missed.
Almost any photo printer will do the job for you. I happen to prefer
Epsons, and think their Colour Management is easier to use than Canon's.
Even your "Free" ( Lexmark with a Dell Badge ) would do the job, if a bit
expensive for Ink.
At the moment you are limited by your Camera. 2.1 Mp is not enough to
produce a 10 x 8 inch print. It will easily produce good quality 6 x 4
prints but not much bigger.
If you want to produce good quality 10 x 8 prints, you will need to learn a
bit about editing, as well as getiing a better Camera. So that, for
example, you can correct colour imbalances due to varying lighting
conditions, etc, etc.
Printing can be a bit more complicated than just sending the image file to
"Print". There is a whole science of Colour Management involved.
The little 6 x 4 printers, are designed to work well for people who do not
wish to get involved in the technicalities, but even with them some editing
skill is needed, because most Cameras take pictures which are 6 x 4.5
I hope this info is of a bit more use than just advocating a paricular
Printer Model to you.

If you're looking to save money on printing photos, your best bet is to
take your photos to Walgreen's, Target, Costco, etc. and have them
printed there. You will pay less per picture than you can do it
yourself, plus you'll get archive quality prints.
If you prefer the convenience of printing photos at home, any of the
cheap Epson Photo Stylus printers would work fine. You can find an Epson
photo printer for $100. Same with Canon and HP. Buy whatever is on sale. >> Stay informed about: Photo Printer Recommendations? |

Ilford would be my pick of the papers if it was important anyway and
profiles are available for the good papers. Personally if I was doing it for
others commercially I would probably go with a smaller Epson and live with
the nozzle blockage problems, if I was doing it for myself for fun I would
go with the bigger of the Canon A4 printers and get larger sizes printed
commercially (two different friends have large Epsons so do them for the
right price anyway). >> Stay informed about: Photo Printer Recommendations? |
