Like 4x optical zoom that you'd see written on a compact camera spec

So, divide 55 by 18. The answer is: 3.0555555555555555x

Well, 18-55mm. What is your real question?

"4x optical zoom" refers to the ratio between the longest and the shortest focal
length of the lens. For a 18-55 lens that would be 55/18 = 3.05. So, it's almost
exactly 3x zoom.

There's a common misconception that "4x optical zoom" somehow refers to the
observed magnification the lens produce in the viewfinder (like, say, "4x
magnification" on binoculars), while in reality it has absolutely nothing to do
with it.

It has a 3.055556x nominal zoom range, depending on your
calculator's precision. Individual samples probably range from
3.05x to 3.06x, or not. Smile The zoom range is just the result of
dividing the lens's largest focal length by the shortest, so for
Nikon's 18-200mm VR lens, the zoom range is 11.11x.

I thought he was asking 35mm equivalent. For the sensor size on most
dslr's, there is an adjustment factor of 1.5x.

You don't know to divide 55 by 18?

55/18 = 3.06
So it's a 3x zoom.

I would assume, though I certainly could be wrong, that the quoted 18-55
is probably the 35mm equivalent. At any rate, the question was slightly
ambiguous or at least unclear.

I'm probably wrong but an 18mm-55mm lens on a 35mm camera without a (1.6x)
DSLR factor would be more like -3/4X (wide angle 18mm) to (just about 1:1
50mm is 1X). On a DSLR with a 1.6X factor you would have the equivalent
of (28.8mm -1/2X power wide angle ) to (88.00 mm or a little over 1.75X
power).
