Olympus C-2500L flashing d problem

Hi, I'm new to this group and have a problem with one of my Olympus
C-2500L (I have 2). When I power it up, it makes a whiring noise and
the display panal changes from a regular displan to a flashing d with
OOFC in the lower left part of the window. I fixed it once by removing
all the batteries and letting it sit for a while. But it soon quit
working agian. If I start it up in the display photo mode, it will read
the card and display pictures, but as soon as I switch it to the "P"
mode, it repeats the error message. Has anyone run into this and what
can be done about it?

I have searched the archives, but found nothing to help.
