Yes, both are soft in the corners unless stopped way down. Did he
compare the discontinued Nikon 28/1.4? The one that sells for $3,000.00

Empty your wallet
You can see the actual composition as you shoot, it does 2-frame
stitched shots without interpolation and the tilt allows controlling DOF
but that's only really useful for closeups. >> Stay informed about: Nikon D40/D40x + night lens ? |

Well, they are lenses with a different application. For architecture,
particularly on a DSLR, 30mm may be much more useful. Take a look through
the viewfinder.

When deciding between Canon and Nikon, be sure to hold the cameras in the
shop.
There's two reasons to visit your local store, and buy there once you've
used their facilities.

I found one was much better than the other - but that's subjective, of
course. I ended up with the Nikon D40.

Yes, although the Canon kit lens is generally held in lower regard than
the Nikon. Both now offer 18 - 55mm image-stabilised kit lenses, and the
IS/VR does make hand-holding at longer exposures so much easier. Be aware
that 18-55mm on a DSLR in similar in feild of view to 27-82mm on a 35mm
film camera.

My own take is that the Nikon kit lens is pretty good, better than the
Canon kit lens, so I'm surprised you didn't see much difference.

Which is probably just what you want in a working camera - no expected
surprises, they just sit there and work, are intuitive rather than
"exciting" to operate, and don't "excite" you by tiring your hands or
rubbing the hands during a day's use.
If you want "exciting", try a Sigma?

I already have Sigma SD14. I bought it because I wanted the "exciting"
quality pictures, that is pictures with vivid and deep natural colors.
But, in reality, it turned out it was nothing to write home about. (I
am using the kit 18-55 mm lens.) >> Stay informed about: Nikon D40/D40x + night lens ? |

Hello, David:
Minor correction: That's not true of a full-frame DSLR.

The thread is entitled D40/D40x, to which my incorrectly spelt comment
applies.
