Archived from groups: rec>photo>digital (more info?)

It appears that once again, this entire NG has been usurped. I hate to
see this happen. I'm not a regular contributor, not even much of a
lurker. But I check it out occasionally to see what's going on in the
field and if there's anything I can use. Unfortunately, it's been taken
over by a lower life form, sub-amoebic, and appears to be wiped out.
Sad. And this certanly isn't the first time I've found it this way.
Isn't there some way this NG can be moderated so this kind of mindless
drivel can be immediately removed? There must be a way to prevent this.
To continue to allow it is to turn the NG over to the lowest elements
of our society, and they are pretty low! Anyone have any ideas on how
to retake the NG from this, and other, bozos? (Not intending to insult
clowns, BTW!)

This is usenet. It's always been that way, and probably always will,
and the flow changes constantly from one end to the other - you
probably have just managed to always hit tide at low ebb :^)

There is a moderated newsgroup (rec.photo.moderated), but you probably
are not going to be able to change the charter (to unmoderated) on an
established big-8 group like this. It (r.p/m) is also far less active
- my news server has 751 articles on r.p.m going back to January of
2004, while this group has over 54K articles. Many are worthless, but
if you set up your killfiles and [priority filters] properly, it
doesn't take much time to weed things out.

You need only reflect that one of the best ways to get yourself a
reputation as a dangerous citizen these days is to go about repeating
the very phrases which our founding fathers used in the struggle for
independence.

Which may suggest to you a solution - contribute more! Ignore the
rubbish, and help make it work. Simple, really.

Just one? Who? Can't say I've noticed a particular recent change -
there have always been, and always will be, morons. Sometimes they get
a little more verbal than others (school holidays?). When that
happens, I am motivated to post *more* to help balance things.

Use filters, or go find such a moderated group - there are plenty
around if you look. I prefer to see the entire world, warts and all.

PS, If you are referring to the DB person, they have left several clues
as to their origin, and complaints have been lodged. Merry Xmas to
you, DB.

It happens to all groups, infact some of those nuts seem to have
programs that allow them to post the same drivel to hundreds
simultaneously. It hasn't killed a group yet. Mostly they get tired of
it and quit or you can just put them in your kill file and they will not
even appear.

DB can indeed be very nasty. I hope the complaints work.

They are all that way. And if you killfile all the OT posters, you end up
with no one in the group. We have all been guilty of it at some time or other
(this thread is off topic, for example).

But the really offensive stuff can be filtered out by most news readers. I
use Hogwasher.

One word

Newsproxy,

I haven't seen a single issue of what you describe.

And like it that way.

Drop a couple of names into your block list and all will be good again.

This has always been a contentious newsgroup - given the subject matter. I
actually left at the height of the film vs. digital controversy - which
thank God is over now.

I use Outlook Express, make heavy use of Block Sender and Ignore Subject,
and ignore what does not interest me. After all that, things are not bad at
all.

That said, there are other forums for discussing Photoshop related issues.
The Yahoo groups can be accessed via email, and have a much friendlier tone.

Yes, we get idiots from time to time. Learn to use the filtering
capability of your newsreader program, and ignore the idiots. DON'T
reply to them, and they WILL go away.

I will not use moderated newsgroups. All of them suppress any opinion
that doesn't go straight down the line with the moderator. It is better
to have to filter an annoying poster than to have no useful exchange of
opinions, or values.

I must have the offender in my killfile already, because I have no idea who
you guys are discussing, nor do I recall seeing any series of
unusually-offensive posts.

So, perhaps those of you that are seeing inappropriate stuff ought to
killfile the offender and everything will be, hopefully, fine.
