About 3.5 years ago I bought my Minolta Dimage 7i. Last week, when I got it
out of the camera bag, the LCD and EVF showed nothing but the status info
and old pictures. All new pictures I took were completely black.

Has anyone ever experienced something similar with this type of camera? If
so, were you able to fix it, how and how much did it cost?

If I would need to replace the camera, what would be a good follow-up? I
really like the manual zoom lens and manual focus. It does not need to be a
D-SLR, although I liked the Canon 350D.

Thanks,
Rob.

Wasn't there a recall of these cameras for a sensor problem?

For a follow-up camera, if you need a long zoom lens you can now get image
stabilised lens cameras such as those in the Panasonic and other ranges.
Image stabilisation allows you to hand-hold the camera at about 1/10 of
the shutter speed which would otherwise be required. For example, with a
300mm equivalent zoom, conventional wisdom is that a minimum shutter speed
of 1/300s would be required. With image stabilisation, you may be able to
use 1/30s, allowing photography in considerably lower light conditions.

I have the Panasonic FZ5 which is about half the weight of the Dimage 7i.
The FZ20, FZ30 and recent FZ50 offer manual focus and manual zoom (not the
older FZ20).

I have been very pleased with the pictures from my FZ5, as has my wife
with those from her FZ20.
