I'm looking at a 1GB or 2GB card for a Canon S3 IS (I'm assuming it
will take a 2GB card; will it?).
Canon doesn't seem to give any indication about speed requirements
for memory cards for their cameras.
So, how do I find out just how fast a card must be to work with a
particular camera?
When looking for "compatible" memory at Sandisk's Web site for
example, they suggest their "Extreme III" or "Extreme II" line,
although they don't give any reason for doing so.

Practically any of the current SD cards will do. There is a specification
out for "SDHC" high speed cards, but that has to my knowldege not been
implement in any current camera design. The memory and controller chips
manufactured today are all fast enough for current cameras.
Under www.sdcard.org you can find technical information about SD - cards.
Of course manufacturers keep trying to sell the more profitable products
marked "high speed", but there are no new "low speed" cards.
Most cameras have a full implementation of the FAT 16 file system, with a 2
GB capacity limit.

No camera runs faster than 9 mbps, so anything faster than a SanDisk

Yes, and others may also want today's cards to work at full speed
with future cameras. ("I won't buy any new xxxx cameras because
they won't work with any of my old yyyy cards") >> Stay informed about: Matching memory speed to camera? |

Yes, the Canon S3 does accept 2GB SD cards.
Most of the camera's features will work even with slow cards. Higher
speed cards are only necessary for longer full-sized videos or long
bursts of high-speed continuous shooting. With a slower card, those
features will slow down or stop until the card catches up with the writes.
To get those features to work completely (i.e., until the card is full),
you'll need around a 60x card. >> Stay informed about: Matching memory speed to camera? |

Interesting hat you should ask this question at this time. I have an older
Canon with 7.2mp and nothing is said about card speed anywhere that I can find,
but I just bought a new Casio, and the manual discusses this in some detail.
Basically, it says that if you are going to be taking "movies" or photos in
rapid succession you should use at least a 10X card or faster, but otherwise the
standard will do fine. I also bought a 2GB card and it doesn't say anything
about speed so I assume it's less than 10X and it works great! I'm after volume
rather than speed and I can get about 800 shots at 7M and almost 1,500 at 3M (3½x5).

It has, at least by Canon in some of their newer
cameras. The G7 will use SDHC and I believe others.
Main plus is memory capacity .. which is speced to
32 GB (I think).

It will. I use 2 GB SD cards in my S3 IS. Some
have reported using SDHC cards in an S3, but I do
wonder, since I've not found support to that newer
spec in the manual.

Sandisk Ultra II is plenty fast for the S3 (the
main need for speed is shooting continuous or in
movie mode). Faster cards may transfer images to
the computer faster, but do not improve camera
performance.

Sure glad I didn't pay extra to get an "turbo" 64 MB CF card 4 years ago. >> Stay informed about: Matching memory speed to camera? |

Apparently speed is important. I have a SanDisk 1GB SD card and every
time I fill it up from my DiMAGE Z7 I have a couple dozen images that
are "UNRECOGNIZED FILE FORMAT or CORRUPTED". I then load PhotoRescue
from www.datarescue.com and it finds the files and recovers them minus
their original name. However, it also recovers the meta data with the
file so the names are there within the files.
I have 4 - 512MB SD cards from Lexar, PNY, SanDisk and Dane Elec and
they never have this problem. I bought 2 more 512MB SanDisk SDs so I
can avoid using the 1 GB SanDisk.
Sandisk recommends both the Standard 1GB and Ultra II 1GB for my camera
but my experience indicates otherwise. Apparently there is more of a
compatibility problem with the higher capacity cards.

Well yeah, back in the mists of the USB 1.1 days not even the
fastest card readers would have helped much. But did you ever
figure out why your camera's video clips were limited in length to 7
seconds when your non-turbo 64MB CF card should have been able to
create video clips as long as 55 seconds? >> Stay informed about: Matching memory speed to camera? |
