Archived from groups: rec>photo>digital (more info?)

I've now found what would seem to be the definitive story.
The original page is missing (for the moment at least),
but is archived at
<http://web.archive.org/web/20070624160310/http://panasonic.co.jp/pavc/global/lumix/popup/behind_the_scenes/vol3.html>
or <http://tinyurl.com/3ble8x>
In short:
* Lumix Leica lenses are designed by Panasonic
* Designs are reviewed and accepted or rejected by Leica
* Leica demands Leica level performance for acceptance
* Leica specifies manufacturing quality control
* Lumix Leica lenses exhibit Leica level performance
I personally think that makes them "real" Leica lenses,
but as always, YMMV.

As with cars and laptops, you don't know where they are made, but the badge
on them is, and always should be, a guarantee of top quality workmanship and
superior design technology.

Leica & Lumix - I know that the Leica C-Lux & D-Lux are rebranded into Panasonic Lumix models (at a hefty cost reduction). Other than not having the red dot, are there any other significant differences in the models. I believe the senors are the same, as are the len...

The Leica M8 is on it's way - Getting one? - We will finally get an digital M body Leica and there will be a quality digital rangefinder available. I'm ready to get on and three new lenses to use with it since the 1.3 crop sensor will require a different line up than the basic three of the film..

Are LEICA good? - At one time the Leica lens were the best money could buy. Then Japan took over and Leica faded away. Now Panasonic is advertising the use of Leica lens. I wonder what exactly is the meaning of the Leica name and who makes the lens now?

A Leica D-Lux 3 question - I am thinking of buying one of these. The reports talk of a high quality machined aluminum body. The silver body is stunning but I'm partial to a black camera body. Anybody know what they use to make silver bodies black nowadays? Is it simple paint..

A Leica D-Lux 3 query - Anyone actually have these available now? The first three big camera stores that I tried, which list them as "in stock", I find do not really have them in stock.....there oughta be a law.....
