Hi,

I just wanted to thank everybody who was kind enough to offer advice to my
earlier post (Lens dilema). I'm now the proud owner of a 70-200mm 2.8 L USM
IS and I'm very happy with my choice.

I decided not to get the 2x converter just yet, so I don't think the lens
will solve ALL my wishes (particularly for some wildlife or sports shoots)
but as a walkaround for candids and such, it's a marvellous piece of glass.
I'm very happy with image quality, and delighted with AF speed.

Thanks again to all who offered their views.

If one lens would work in all situations none of us would have to be
spending all our free time drooling over some lens that would "fit so nice
in my lens collection". Smile

How true Smile However, I am trying to avoid getting into that situation by
buying a select range of top-notch lenses to suit my shooting habits and
preferences.

My bank balance (not to mention my wife!) doesn't allow any room for error
here, so I need to make careful choices. For example, I can't see me getting
anything decent at the ultra-wide end for a very long time because I rarely
find the need for it.

Actually, the way I see things lenses are a more worthwhile investement than
cameras. A good lens will be with me for a VERY long time (hopefully)
whereas my camera will be a museum piece soon. At least, that's what I tell
the wife.....

Cheers

embee,
I'm in much the same situation with regard to the
camera lens bank account. I'm considering my 1st "L" glass lens to
add to my 30D & have considered the same lens but think I may go with
the new EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM version instead.

Not planning on using it with a tele-converter because the
70-200mm (112-320mm equiv.) on my 30D should meet my needs just fine.
The f2.8 over the f4 would be nice but I don't think I want that much
added weight to carry about.

Please post back or E-mail me after you have had some more
time to evaluated how the weight of this lens is working out for you.
Also please share a description of the type of photographs that you
take most often with this lens. It's interesting to me to go back &
look @ where in the room range most of my pictures seem to gravitate
toward & that was a big factor in deciding on this zoom range.

At present I have an EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM which I am
very pleased with considering it's cost. But the following reasons
have me wanting to add this new lens to my modest collection:

<1> Want/need better optical quality for certain uses.
<2> Want a fixed f stop when zooming.
<3> Want a non-rotating front lens element.
<4> Want a non-extending front lens element.
<5> Want a weather sealed lens.
<6> Do not find myself @ the 200-300mm (320-480mm Equiv.) "most" of
the time.

Before I decide between the f2.8 of the f4 it also may be wise
for me to hand hold each on my camera & see how it feels/balances.
The biggest thing keeping me from pre-ordering the new EF 70-200mm
f/4L IS USM now is that I also plan on using it with a C-PL & that
loss of light may hinder it's ability to focus both quickly &
accurately, making the f2.8 lens a better choice.

Your added input after you have had a bit of time to further
evaluate this lens would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Respectfully, DHB

Hi,

I will certainly email you when I've used the lens a bit more to give you
more info about the issues you raise. I'm now off work for a few days so -
as long as the British weather is kind - I should have the chance to use it
quite a bit.

Cheers
