Archived from groups: rec>photo>digital (more info?)

I'm finding that I'm taking pictures that need keystone corrections
(album covers as I convert my LPs to CD). One of my digital cameras
can do keystone corrections, but it doesn't always detect the correct
edges which leads to distorted images. So I'm wondering what, if any,
photo editors can do this on my computer (WinXP Pro).

I currently have ACDSee 8 and an older version of Paint Shop Pro, v7,
if it can be done in what I already have and just haven't found how.

Helicon filter seems to do it, they have a free period for trial

Photoshop calls this perspective correction and has several ways to
do this.
I show a couple of them in the tips section on my web site.

Photoshop? The full thing costs over $600!

I'll give them a try if Hugin doesn't work out for me. Thank you.

Paint Shop Pro does it. Download it for a trial from
corel.com. If you buy it, shop for a rebate or bargain
ptice, which is often available from CompUSA and other vendors.

For geometric distortions, including pincushion and/or barrel
distortions, you could learn to use a utility also used for panoramic
stitching purposes.

Hugin is one of those, it's free, and it's getting better all the
time:
<http://hugin.sourceforge.net/>
You'll only use a small subset of it's capabilities for just
keystoning correction, but it does work quite well for that too.

This looks promising, thanks.

Photoshop 7 certainly can. I use it every now and then.

You will need at least Photoshop Elements for this kind of operation, or
equivalent.

Which version was it added? I've got version 7.

Take the picture so that the edges of the cover are parallel with the edges
of the viewfinder.

Get it right when taking, saves a lot of time and effort later.

Do that, and I need to use the flash. Use the flash, and all I see is
reflected flash flare. I know, I've tried. In order to not get flash
flare and/or use ambient light, I +need+ to take the pictures at an
angle.

My choice of locations to take the pictures are extremely limited.

Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Guidelines for Legion of Doom Troops: 10. Test your armor's ability to
stop a minimum of one sword thrust or laser blast, and if it does not
give at least this much protection, respectfully inquire after

Photoshop Elements 4.0 has that feature, much cheaper.

Can you fire the flash through a diffuser or bounce off a white card? I
use a large (A3) sheet of white cartridge paper with the flash pointing
into it.
