Hello,

does anyone know a support email address of Pentax in Japan?

(They have a WWW form for support, but only in Japanese... standard
guesses like support DeleteThis @pentax.co.jp don't work.)

Thanks,
Olaf

What language are you planning on writing to them in? If it's not Japanese,
I don't recommend it. Any Japanese company's local support service in Japan
is set up to handle requests in the local language, which happens to be
Japanese. (Epson even goes to the lengths of having completely different
model numbers for the same products in the Japanese market, so you can't ask
about your printer/scanner, since it doesn't exist in Japan.)

FWIW, if you want to ask Pentax questions, you need to go through this page
(which I think you found).

http://www.pentax.co.jp/japan/support/product_web.html

The first page is an agreement that (a) Pentax isn't responsible for
anything you say, and (b) any ideas you state in your email immediately
become Pentax property.

Then you go to the next page, which lets you compose an email message in a
web form, which is, of course, in Japanese.

Hello,

thank you for your message. Although I visited in Japan for 3 months,
unfortunately I'm unable to write in Japanese. I bought the camera in
Japan, though, and the model is not available in Europe. That's why I
think I should contact the Japanese support.

Best regards,
Olaf

Hmm. That is a problem. Still, I'd recommend talking to Pentax Europe first.
I suppose it all depends on whether or not you can find a sympathetic
individual who will realize that Pentax has a lot to gain in customer good
will if they can handle the problem. If you were careful to insist on an
international warrantee, then you should get some help from Pentax Europe.

If you have a non-Japanese version of Windows XP, just add a Japanese
keyboard from the Regional and Language options in the Config Panel
(Languages tab, details button). This will enable the built-in IME and
you can switch between this keyboard and the original keyboard via the
icon in the task bar.

Try
http://www.pentax.co.jp/japan/support/

Within the site is
https://service.pentax.jp/pentax/user

Fill in the boxes. Starred items

Camera

Unit number

Name
furigana (type anything)

postcode - use 631-0076 (it's mine)

Japan prefecture (choose anything)

Type in your problem

Telephone number

email

want info about Pentax? No - choose right.

Scroll to the bottom

Left button - submit
Right button - Reset

If you've got a Mac typing in Japanese will be simple, but if you're
using windows you just can't do it.

Hope this helps...

It comes with Windows XP. You may have to load Japanese support (fonts + the
IME), either from the CDs or from the CD image that sometimes gets left on
the hard disk by the mfr. of the PC, unless you had the malice aforethought
to load it when you installed XP.

Minor quibble: you really don't want to play with keyboard emulation.
There's no need for a special keyboard for Japanese. The standard Japanese
keyboard has a few extra keys and allows you to type Japanese phonetics
directly, but it's a lot easier to use 17 English letters in two or three
letter combinations than to frantically hunt through 50 special purpose
keys.

I forget the details, but Japanese is less pleasant with Windows 95/98/SE/ME
than with XP. Under XP, if your applications are implemented correctly for
internationalization (as MS Office and Outlook Express are), Japanese and
Arabic and Chinese and Hebrew just work. Local-only applications (as most
Japanese-market applications are, sigh) require you to set up your computer
for the corresponding local.

While (unlike Unix) NT/Win2K/XP are fully modern operating systems based on
Unicode from the ground up, friends don't let friends use 95/98/SE/ME.

I use japanese IME without problems in win 2k greek, of course romaji input
(too difficult kana input)and when I want to insert japanese text in a
newsgroup message I use copy & paste. The same goes for special characters of
French and German, too inconvenient to have a special keyboard for
everything.I have only 3 settings : greek, english and japanese.
