Got a Kodak Z712 for Xmas. Know absolutely nothing about digital
photography and am basically computer illiterate. While I'm trying to
figure out how to load the software on the camera can anyone tell me
something about the EASYSHARE G610 Printer Dock? If I get one of
these can I then make prints with camera and printer alone... sans
computer that is?

There should be no need to install the software. You should be able to
plug the camera (or better yet, a USB memory card reader) into the
computer and transfer files.

Yes, with a dock like that (assuming it's the correct one for that camera)
you can print without computer.

Why would you do that? Any digital camera I have ever seen comes ready to
shoot.
Even if there is a firmware update available if I were you I would wait a
while until I become more knowlegdeable about the camera or have someone
else do it because firmware updates are the one thing that can render the
camera inoperative if done wrong.

Just following the sparse black letter instructions that came with the
camera... to wit, "1) Before installing any cables, install the
software that was included with your camera. Follow the on-screen
instructions."

I'm guessing he's talking PC software that came with the camera.

That will load some software on your computer - as I previously noted, it
is pretty much irrelevant.

Hello,

The camera's bundled EasyShare software isn't really required, if you
simply want to transfer pictures to your PC; an inexpensive memory card
reader can perform this very basic task, instead.

Still, if you'd like to organize and/or edit your digital images - and
your system is lacking a graphics program - then, EasyShare could come
in quite handy, for you. Personally, it's only needed with my P850's RAW
files, as they're proprietary to Kodak. (Normally, I employ Paint Shop
Pro 7, the vast majority of the time.)

As to the various EasyShare printer docks: Yes, indeed, they allow one
to produce photo-quality prints, without the aid of a computer.

By the way, I own several other Kodak digicams, in addition to the P850.
I've always been impressed by their overall value and ease of use, and
I think you'll feel the same way, about your new Z712.

Good luck and Happy New Year!

Cordially,
John Turco <jtur.TakeThisOut@concentric.net>
