Archived from groups: rec>photo>digital (more info?)

I have a Canon PowerShot G2 that I haven't used in a long time.

I've taken some pics with it and need to transfer them to my PC.

I have what I believe is a USB data transfer cable that came with the
camera. It connects the camera to the PC, but my Windows XP PC does
not find the camera when it is plugged in.

Is there software or something else needed?

Thanks.

is there a setting for usb mass storage ?

otherwise, get a card reader. it will be much faster.

Get a card reader. They're cheap (<$20), and any PC will recognize it
without additional software. Transfers will be faster than from the camera
as well.

I'm not familiar with that model, so I can't give specific advice on
specialize software. However, if nobody comes up with an answer, a
fairly easy workaround is to buy a USB card reader. They're pretty
cheap, starting at around $10 or so.

Winxp has and uses WIA for the canon, although canon supplies the same
driver. Connect the camera, then power up in review or read mode. A
window should pop up. You can either use the options offered or cancel,
in which case windows explorer will display an item for the camera. A
drive number is not assigned. I prefer to do it this way, the camera
wizard file handling is not to my liking.

When I try this, going through the options does not get me any closer
to getting Windows XP to find the camera. I get "The drivers for this
device are not installed".

I have no disk for the camera, and do not know if these cameras ever
came with one.

BTW, I do have a USB card reader that works fine, but I'd like to be
able to conenct the camera directly without the card reader.

Thanks.

Every Canon camera I've had needed the driver to be installed first before
images could be downloaded. Aside from not wanting to go through that extra
step, I found transfers to be much faster with the reader. Without the
driver, you have no choice but to use the reader.

Do yourself a big favour and get a memory card reader that plugs into your
computer permanently. They are dirt cheap (<20$ US), transfer is faster than
from the camera, and most of all _MUCH_ more convenient.

FWIW, the driver is available from CanonUSA.com.
Start by clicking on "support" from the home page...

I've just downloaded and installed it and it works fine
on XP Pro on my G2.

But generally speaking I use a CF card reader.

For whatever reason, Canon does not implement the "USB mass storage
device" protocol for their cameras, so you can't see the installed card
as a disk when the camera is plugged into the computer. Many other
manufacturers do that.

The special Canon driver software knows how to talk to the camera as a
Canon camera, and download images that way.

Recent Canon cameras (but not the G2; it's too old) also implement
another protocol (PTP) that allows Windows XP or later to transfer
images from the camera without the special Canon driver. But you have
to put the camera into PTP mode for this.

>But generally speaking I use a CF card reader.

That's what I always do. An external card reader is also generally
*much* faster than using the camera as a card reader, and doesn't use up
camera battery power.

I did try downloading that software to a temporay folder, and even to
my flash drive before installing, but my system still doesn't find the
camera. And it's probably too complicated to figure out how to remedy
this, so I guess I'm just stuck with the card reader.

Oh well.

Hmm. When you plug in the camera in Playback mode, using the
supplied USB connector, the camera appears as a drive called
"PowerShot G2".

You can't manipulate that drive with the full range of Explorer
controls, but you can cut/paste/copy the files from there to
any other folder and from there, do what you want with them.

That sounds like it might be a special driver. I wonder if the G2
provides PTP protocol?

When my G2 is plugged into a Windows 2000 system, it's recognized as a
camera, and appears in the Device Manager, but there's no way to get an
Explorer window to show it like a disk drive. You have to use Canon's
software or an equivalent (e.g. Breeze Downloader) to get any image
data off the card.

Are you sure there's no setting on the camera to specify when it's attached
to USB on pc how it's "seen", e.g. as a Camera (usually means it can also be
used as a webcam, scanner etc.) or a Mass Storage Device (removable disk
drive)? I have three digital cameras and all have a similar type setting
buried in some menu. When they're attached as a MSD, Explorer is all I use
to move/copy/delete pics of camera's memory card(s).
