Define what is "best" for you.

Generally most people will agree that the best results come from InkJet
printers. I would tend to agree.

I have two InkJets down in my basement, one with a set of cartridges the
other is for 17"x11" prints. I have not used either one since I bought my
color laser over a year ago. It happens to be a Minolta and now I believe
it is a discontinued model. In that time I am still working with the
original toner and I have saved enough over the price of ink cartridges to
buy new toner when it finally needs them. With my use I ended up with
clogged ink almost once a week. I tried all the tricks and four different
printers from three companies.

The results I get from the laser is not quite as good, but it is good,
faster and overall I doubt if I will ever use an inkjet again. If I want
higher quality I have it done commercially.

I had thought standard 4 color lasers are just not good for
photos?

Canon Pixima iP6700D looks like one of the best mainstream photo
printers, from what I can see.

Frankly I thought that as well. What I found was they are good. I
would not say my laser is better or even as good as the better InkJets, but
it is not bad. It fulfills my basic needs and as I said, for the few times
I want better, I can use a commercial service that is better than the
inkjets I have had.

What is your budget?
I tend to think color laser printers too expensive for the printer and toner
cartridges (nothing like having to buy 4 $150 toner cartridges to get started)

If your budget is open, there's lots of great printers.

There is another class, inkjet printers used for pre - print proofing now
also sold by Kodak. Example:

Machines in professional print shops get upgraded from time to time, before
Kodak bought the company it was selling under its own name: Creo - Scitex.
When you Google for that name (or search on eBay), you may find used
equipment fairly easily.

I have a Lexmark C710n with 288 meg of memory and find even with
high quality gloss papers specifically designed for laser
printing, photographs do not approach the output of my Epson
Photo 780 on Epson photo paper.

I have been considering a purchase of a Canon, but I am hoping
that they will come out with a model in the US that can also
print directly to CD/DVD's. Now that HP has come out with one,
it looks like Epson no longer has a lock on the market.

Still, taking them to Costco to be printed usually gives pretty
decent results.

Hi.

Up until very recently, I would have agreed with you about the R1800 and the
2400. I have just seen some results from the new A2 HP Photo Printer,
(can't remember its number), which were very impressive.

The owner had profiles made for it by someone in Belgium who specialises in
this Printer, and the quality was really outstanding. Admittedly he shoots
on a Hassel, and then scans the negs, so he has a good File to start with,
but they were better than anything I have seen so far.

That depends on your definition of "best" and your budget. I haven't
compared all the available printers, but I am happy with my Epson R1800.

Thanks for all this great advise. I am having a custom profile made
for my current canon MP830 but its a multi purpose printer and I doubt
it will apporach my desires. I think I will save my pennies for one
of the epsons sited here R800 R1800 and R2400

Since I dont do a lot of black and white, I am leaning toward the
R1800 looks amazing. How do you R1800 owners feel ?

You must be a master of understatement. <g> Frankly, where anything
approaching photo-quality output is concerned, inkjets absolutely blow
away lasers; the latter are quite adequate (and even superior), for most
other tasks.

I just suggest that anyone who is trying to make a decision, should
consider all the options. It is not difficult to find actual examples of the
output of most printers. Usually you can get samples printed at the store
selling the printers. Of course the samples have been optimized and should
be considered the highest likely quality possible in each case.

Don't be surprised that if you are looking for a sample inkjet printed
while you are there at a not so busy store than they may need to run a
cleaning cycle or two before you get anything close to acceptable. Smile
