Hi.

Having got into digital, I could do with a graphics tablet for minor photo
editing but what size do I need? I know they adjust the working area to
your screen size but what is a good practical size? Is A6 too small? The
price lift between A6 and A5 is steep but I don't want the grief of having
to learn the hard way that I have over/under budgeted. Any advice? Also any
recommendations?? Thanks
Regards,
Dennis

I have the Wacom Intuos 3 6x11. It's bigger than I need for the most part
and generally use a smaller active area. If you have a widescreen monitor
you'd probably want the wide version of the tablets. I might consider the 4"
for home use but would definitely stick with the Intuos family, it's well made
and has high resolution and most importantly the pen is helping my arm feel normal again from mouse induced pain.

I just got an A4 tablet and the beauty of it is that you can
change the work area so you either use the whole thing or you can
specify a small area in the middle so you don't have to move the
pen about so much.

You can also set the tracking mode as pen (absolute) or Mouse
(relative) so the flexibility is excelent.

It's a Trust TB4200 it wasn't expensive, £50, I'm in the UK and
have no idea if it's available elsewhere.

I got the smallest Wacom one. For just photo editing it's fine. People
who do a lot of drawing would want a bigger one, but there's no need if
you're just working on photos. Many people will tell you that bigger
ones result in larger arm movements and that appears to be a
disadvantage for photo work. I guess it's somewhat subjective.

I've had mine a few years now and if it broke I'd buy another the same size.

How accurate are you drawing with a mouse? Using the magnetic lasso? The
ordinary lasso?
I'd recommend going all the way to A4, at least at the beginning. Having
a larger tablet means you can work on more than on picture at a time
more easily. If you've gained experience from using one at work, then a
smaller one may be better.
Most A4's came with a tablet mouse too.

I bought an A4 for ?70 last year from PC World -

The size of tablet is a very personal thing. I have Wacoms on all our
machines. 4x5 Graphire 3's on most, a 6x8 Intuos 3 on my main machine. I
fine the 4x5's a bit small, but workable. I love the 6x8 Intuos3. In the
past I have had bigger Wacoms and ended up only using part of it.

Cheers,

Wayne
