Near identical, rotten little silver boxes should be left to the
marketing companies like what's left of Vivitar and GE to produce.
Camera phones will replace the P&S at some point as well. If this
story is true, Pentax is doing the right thing. The evolution of this
will be mirrorless DSLRs.
from amateurphotography magazine:
Pentax to 'phase out' digital compact camera production
Tuesday 12th February 2008
Chris Cheesman
Optio A40
Pentax plans to phase out digital compact camera production and
concentrate on DSLRs, according to a report in a leading Japanese
trade journal, which has not been denied by Pentax Europe.
Pentax, which is one of the most famous brands in photography, is due
to merge with Hoya Corporation on 31 March.
Hoya's CEO Hiroshi Suzuki is reported to have told Japanese trade
magazine Pen News Weekly that Pentax will concentrate on DSLRs and
'gradually phase down development and production of compact digicams
in future'.
At the time of writing we were waiting for an official comment from
Pentax.
It is thought that, in the short term at least, Pentax will use a
third party to manufacture its compact cameras.
The Pen article adds that Hoya 'will focus its development resources
on DSLRs and will gradually phase down marketing operations for
compact digicams under the Pentax brand and specialise in OEM
businesses in order to improve the profit profile of its digicam
business operations'. >> Stay informed about: Good for Pentax! Eliminate the horrible little P&Ss |

All this means is that Pentax got its butt kicked in compact cameras.
Being borged by Hoya isn't a good thing. How sad.

What is Pentax anyway?
They are basically a name sold to Samsung and who knows what Hoya is getting
out of the deal?
The very small Pentax lens lineup is actually made by what Japanese
manufacturer: hint--starts with a "T" and not a "P".
The current issue of Shutterbug is pimping a non/pre-preproduction Pentax
dSLR with a sensor made by who?
For the near term the only old line Japanese SLR makers still in the race
are Nikon and Canon.
For the rest of the market the real question is how long will Olympus, Sony,
Panasonic, Pentax, et al hang in there?
In any event the market for P&Ses dwarfs the dSLR market. However price
beats quality in most of this market segment. >> Stay informed about: Good for Pentax! Eliminate the horrible little P&Ss |

Olympus, Sony, and Panasonic are doing more than "just hanging in there."
Sony is getting very agressive in the SLR market, as is Oly and Panny.
Pentax, whoever they are, will continue to be a player in the SLR market but
will not catch Canon or Nikon, ever.
And as far as them getting out of the compact business, well, they're
cameras sucked and weren't competitive with Canon or Sony. >> Stay informed about: Good for Pentax! Eliminate the horrible little P&Ss |

They work OK, but the best EVF is crude compared to the display in an SLR.
Grainy, ghosting, dull, hard to see in daylight, etc. I've used one
extensively in an FZ50, and compared to the viewfinder in any SLR, it's a
distant second place.

My own take is that the FZ50 viewfinder is quite good. I haven't seen
such problems as you list. Are you thinking of the rear display instead
of the EVF (which isn't a problem in daylight)? Perhaps the one you
tried was defective.

well, i'm happy with my pentax. it's a fine machine, wouldn't want to
have any other at the moment. doesn't matter if pentax is just a name,
doesn't matter if it was made by somebody else. it's the product that
counts, and if it's good than all this talk is just hot air and a
waste of time. >> Stay informed about: Good for Pentax! Eliminate the horrible little P&Ss |
