I am not convinced that this is a good argument. I suspect that different
teams are responsible for DSLR and Compact cameras, and that brand loyalty
between ranges may not provide your best choice.
I suggest you try both brands in the shop - Nikon and Canon - and see
which is better to hold and operate (e.g. when wearing gloves etc.). For
me, Nikon was better than Canon. Not having any lenses, I was free to
choose. The lack of spot metering on the Canon was a further drawback,
and Nikon has a better range of lenses (at good prices).
Some folk also regard Sony and Pentax highly, so perhaps you should give
them a look? You will be used to in-lens IS, and you may want to look for
that in your DSLR as well.
