It's described on page 68. It seems that this allows you to
compose pictures so that the subject can be near, but not
necessarily in the exact center of the frame. If you choose
"Center" AF mode, the camera will only focus on what is in the
center of the frame, and if you wanted the subject to not be in the
exact center of the frame, you'd have to pre-focus, using AF/AE lock
and then reposition the camera to move the subject where you want
it. "Multi" AF appears to allow you to avoid having to use AF/AE
lock, as long as the subject has sufficient contrast, and isn't too
far from the center of the frame. The "Area" AF functions like the
"Center" AF mode, but allows you to move the focusing position on
the screen. As the manual mentions, this can be useful when using a
tripod since in that case it may be inconvenient to move the camera.
