The grip front is too deep to grip properly, it doesn't
correspond to the way fingers are articulated and the
thumb rest is too shallow and too small to work very well.
No way would someone want to hold it by this method for
any length of time. I thought at first the deep front gripping
area would make sense, but it doesn't. They need to go back
to the older shallower front grips.

Hi.

There really is no way anyone should ever buy a camera, without having
handled it first.

The handling and feel is probably the most important feature. All the
others are only of academic interest if the Camera is uncomfortable to use.
It simply won't get used as much as it should.

What feels right to you can feel very wrong to someone else, and vice versa.
Because of this, I never understand why people ask "What is the best
Camera?". There really is no answer.

We're fortunate that cameras don't get to ask "Who are the best
people?". Some more fortunate than others. Smile

Interesting because of one the complaints Panasonic got from the FZ20 users
was that the grip (shallow) wasn't deep enough. I guess you can't please
everyone everytime. Maybe they could come up with interchangable grips. A
shallow, deeper and deep one you just pop on.

I got mine sight-unseen. All these larger cameras feel too big and bulky for
me, so I pretty-much expected this to be the same, and it is. I have small
hands (the current crop of tiny micros feel great to me, but the lenses are
too small!). The big ones all feel awkward. The Olympus something-or-other
the family has, the Canon Rebel, and this Fz30.

Sony's R1 grip is infinitely better. I figure my hands are average
sized for a 6' tall person and it occured to me that had Panasonic
either made the grip somewhat shallower or somewhat deeper,
it would have been a better grip. But then as you said, you can't
match a grip to every hand, but IMO, a shallower grip has a better
chance of working with more hands than a deep one.

Even that can come unstuck if a camera that feels great in the shop damn
near breaks your wrist if you have to hold it in the ready to go
position for long periods.

I don't have any problems with my FZ30's grip but if I was being
seriously anal I might consider tapering the curve between where the
grip extends forward and the main body, so it fitted my fingertips
slightly better.
