Archived from groups: rec>photo>digital (more info?)

I'm looking into some deals for Epson Perfection 1670, 2400, 2480, 2580
scanners. The last two come with transparency adaptors. The main problem
I have is compatibility with Linux. I looked at the website for SANE,
which worries about scanner compatibility with Linux, and these are
all supported, which is why I listed them out of the dozens I had considered.
The last two are listed as having some problems with Linux, in spite of
the Linux support, and these are the only two that come with transparency
adaptors. Also, I'm so ignorant of scanners that I don't know whether a
photo scanner can also be used for ordinary scanning of documents. Even
if the thing is compatible with Linux, I might need to upgrade to a new
version of Linux to gain that compatibility, which has implications of
its own.
