Post subject: Epson 4870 photo scanner problem
Archived from groups: rec>photo>digital (more info?)

Hello everyone! I'm new to the group and i have a problem that i cannot
seem to solve. I am scanning hundreds of old slides for archiving and
i am using adobe photoshop and the epson scanning software which is
really great except for one issue. I am using the template so i can
scan 8 slides at a time and am using the professional mode of this
software. When i use the thumbnail preview option, sometimes the
images get cutoff in weird places and i get black borders that i have
to crop out before i scan the image. When i use the normal preview
mode, this does not happen, but then i have to select each image
individually from a really small pic and end up wasting time by having
to re-crop in photoshop. Anyone else have any sort of problem like
this?

I tried Epson directly and they sent me instructions on how to scan
slides (which I read to see if i was doing anything wrong but i was
using the correct procedure) and they could not help me any further.

any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

thanks all!
lisa

Lisa,
I always oversize the scan whan I'm using our Epson Expression 1600.
You are right about the general view being too small. I don't mind a
quick crop in Photoshop, feel it is easier than getting the scan exact
in the Epson program. I work for a perfectionist too who wants all dust
off of slide being archived from sitting in trays. Once found him
inspecting scans for dust at 200%. So each slide gets a little TLC in
Photoshop anyway.

Tom

Tom - i didn't think of oversizing and the dust issue is such a pain...
I guess no matter what, there is always gonna be some work in
photoshop. At least i know i'm not alone and slides just take a little
extra to get right!
THANKS!!!!
