Hey folks:

For some reason that probably involves marketing statistics and
limited development resources the EasyShare software that supports my
brand-spanking-new Z885 camera doesn't want to talk to anyone who
isn't a machine administrator.

I cannot give users admin rights, even if I wanted to, which I don't.

But I can't be 'in the loop' every time a user needs to download a
picture off of their camera.

I see by scanning this group, that this has been an issue for a while.

I would bypass the EasyShare software alltogether, but I can't.
Unlike _every_ other USB-based-camera I've ever owned, even previous
Kodak cameras, this camera does NOT show up as a 'drive' in explorer.
I would be THRILLED to be able to simply use explorer to transfer my
files into the right folders.

For some reason, Kodak has changed the way that the OS 'picks up' this
new usb device in such a way that ONLY ADMINISTRATORS can 'see' the
device at all, and then only through the EasyShare software.

Has anyone come up with a workaround for this? I'm more than willing
to edit the registry, copy keys from hklm to hkcu or whatever is
needed to make this fly. (I can always just re-image the system if
things get fouled up!)

But what I CAN'T do is make the user an administrator, nor share the
adminsitrator password with the user (not that that would do much good
for long, as it changes regularly - as it should!)

Are Kodak cameras simply not compliant with the Win2K Security Model?

I simply can't belive that MOST people, even with consumer-home
computers, run as 'admin' all the time. Is Joe Consumer really
foolish enough to surf the web as admin?

Anyway, if anyone has a work-around for this, I'd greatly appreciate
it. Otherwise I'll be returning these Kodak cameras, and buying
something that the USERS can use at all!

He probably is, but it certainly is not a good security practice. I have
no difficulty at all accessing the printer dock or camera directly from
Linux.

Ok, problem solved. The trick is that the EasyShare software has to
NOT be installed at all. Then WinXP will pick it up all by it's
lonesome and give you the 'camera and scanner wizzard' which is
serviceable. (ymmv with other OS's as ray pointed out!)

But the uninstall for EasyShare is woefully inadequate, and doesn't
remove the c\prog...\kodak directory, more less the problematic
registry keys. (In their defence, my guess is they got tired of
customers cluelessly screaming at them when the customer lost his
photos by saying 'yes' to the 'are you sure you want to delete this
directory?' prompt! But the uninstall should at least un-register the
startup keys! especially HARDWARE related keys!)

They do have a 'clean' tool for those not brave (or foolhardy!) enough
to tamper with the registry directly.
http://www.kodak.com/go/clear

Haven't tested that for myself, so can't speak to whether that will
take out the usb-sniffer-interupter that's in the way.

Hope that helps anyone having or about to have the same problem. So
far, I like the camera (Z885). The osm is navigable, the pictures
turn out fine, it's small - but not too small, and the lcd is huge.
Haven't had it long enough to coment on battery life though....

EasyShare, well....it's time to leave the one-user-one-system DOS
security model behind folks!
