Ok, problem solved. The trick is that the EasyShare software has to
NOT be installed at all. Then WinXP will pick it up all by it's
lonesome and give you the 'camera and scanner wizzard' which is
serviceable. (ymmv with other OS's as ray pointed out!)
But the uninstall for EasyShare is woefully inadequate, and doesn't
remove the c\prog...\kodak directory, more less the problematic
registry keys. (In their defence, my guess is they got tired of
customers cluelessly screaming at them when the customer lost his
photos by saying 'yes' to the 'are you sure you want to delete this
directory?' prompt! But the uninstall should at least un-register the
startup keys! especially HARDWARE related keys!)
They do have a 'clean' tool for those not brave (or foolhardy!) enough
to tamper with the registry directly.

Haven't tested that for myself, so can't speak to whether that will
take out the usb-sniffer-interupter that's in the way.
Hope that helps anyone having or about to have the same problem. So
far, I like the camera (Z885). The osm is navigable, the pictures
turn out fine, it's small - but not too small, and the lcd is huge.
Haven't had it long enough to coment on battery life though....
EasyShare, well....it's time to leave the one-user-one-system DOS
security model behind folks!
