You are partially right, as many of those sights are scams. An easy
test that I use is to do a search on their site for a file named
xxxzzzxx (or some other combination)
Try it. The scam sites will tell you they have it, it has been
downloaded xx times at xx speeds, and if you sign up you can download it
at blazing speeds.
However, Rapidshare, and Hotfiles are both legit and offer good value -
they both also allow you to do free downloads - if you choose not to
sign up you just have to wait 60 seconds or such before you can
download, and you can only download so many times in an hour.
