Hi.
I was wondering: How many megapixel does standard film translate to? I want
to buy a digital camera that is at least as good as film.
Thanks

There'll never be consensus on what -or if, for some- that threshold is.

So, fergeddaboudit, and buy a camera that suits your needs.

What are your needs?

If is not as simple as how many pixels, a lot depends on how you have
been shooting film.

What film have you been using?

What size prints have you had made?

Where have you had the prints made?

If you are talking about prints no larger then 4 x 6 then even a good 3
MP camera will be
more then enough. If you have been using good slow film (no faster then
ISO 100) and having
8 x 10 prints made then you will need a good 6 - 8 MP camera.

And as others have said no all pixels are the same, a 6 MP DSLR can
often produce a sharper photo then an 8 MP point and shoot.

For some reason the people on here like to blow things out of all
proportions instead of just answering the question.

For standard size prints like 4x6, 5x7 and 8x10 a good quality 6MP camera
will do nicely. All images from a digital camera are going to need a small
bit of sharpening and maybe a small bit of color exposure correction so a
program like Adobe Photoshop Elements is recommended. However there is no
reason what-so-ever that you can't get film comparable prints in the sizes
above that match a film print of the same size.

When Kodak brought out its 12 (or was it 13?) Mp camera,
they announced that it matched the resolution of 35 mm film.
There is no digicam I'm aware of that compares to larger
film formats.

And (of course) 35mm films varies greatly, both by brand,
and then ISO speed, tranny vs print, and B&W vs Colour.

Yep, and that would be like juice oranges and eating oranges. Smile

Sorry but you are comparing apples and oranges. Even then a red
delicious is not like a granny smith.

As best I can suggest that somewhere between 3 - 10 MP is a good idea of
where the cross over point it. However keep in mind that all of the same MP
are not created equal. For example I would take a good 5MP over a sloppy
10MP any day.

I would say you would likely be happy with any of the current SLR models
from Nikon or Canon.

Stop by http://www.dpreview.com/ and do some shopping.

Before you make your final choice make sure you get it into your hands
and have a chance to go through the motions of actually taking photos. The
placement of controls etc, can make a big difference in how you like the
camera. You had size is likely different than mine so what might feel great
to me, may be awkward for you.

Depends on the film. Do you mean 35mm? Also depends on the camera. Do
you want the equivelent of a 35mm box camera? point'n'shoot? Top end
SLR?

Also keep in mind that consumer digital camera sensors are tiny compared to
a 35MM frame. You might be able to make a 35megapixel sensor, but it won't
be much better than a 6MP and possibly much worse due to noise.

I suggest you go do your own homework. Do some google searches for things
like "digital versus film photography"

In reading the above page, don't just stop at figure 1.
Check out the apparent image quality (AIQ) section. The signal-to-
noise ratio of an image also affects its apparent sharpness.

I bought digital (D100) when they came out, and upgraded to a D200 last
Christmas. I have not shot a roll of 35mm or MF film since, and my F5 and
Mamiya MF SLR are sitting in the corner. My images are as good as they have
ever been.

lenses - digital vs film are they compatible? - Hi everyone, Im considering buying a Nikon D70 (body only) and plannign on using my Nikkor lense (from an old N6006, film). film question - This is the kind of film question that rec.photo.digital people might know the answer to. I've been keeping a roll of 800 film in the refrigerator for two and a half years now. Is it likely to still be good? At what point do I throw it away?

best digital under $400? - I need a new camera for my workplace. It's been years since I've bought a camera, so I'm not up to speed, yet I need this in the next few days. Estimated budget was $300, but I can stretch it. Output needs to be good enough for (occasional) publication...
