IMO it's false economy to use more than one printer - unless you have
some mission critical need for backup.
They all waste ink, including the newest HP models, which are pretty
good - when they work. Multiply the waste ink by the number of printers
that you keep in working condition to calculate how much extra you're
adding to the huge profits HP/Epson/Canon make selling ink.

Lots of us utilize online printing services. I prefer real prints, on
silver halide paper and made with real photo dyes. Unless one requires
immediate prints, or has special requirements for exact color
characteristics, printing at home is a pain and is more expensive than just
letting the professionals do it.

Yeah, we us mpix and White House, both are great, and fast. But sometimes I
want/need to get something printed right now, and that's where the Canon
comes in. We use an Epson R200 for workaday printing, invoices, CDs,
labels, etc.

I recommend a cheap Brother or Lexmark (or even HP) Laser printer for the more
mundane tasks you mention. Far cheaper than inkjet and better quality for the
most part. You can get decent desktop laser printers for less than $100 these
days (i.e. Brother 2040).

How long before fading?

If the prints are meant for short-term use, then it might not matter. But
do we always know in advance just how long we expect to keep our prints?

Hello, Thomas:

I agree, except for your brand recommendations. In my opinion, Samsung
is the best option, from a price/performance standpoint.

Conversely, Brother is probably the worst.

Hello, Jeremy:

Fading won't be an issue, as laser printers utilize "toner" (which is
dried ink, basically), that is "fused" onto the paper.

> If the prints are meant for short-term use, then it might not matter. But
> do we always know in advance just how long we expect to keep our prints?

Although color lasers have become reasonably priced, within the past
year or so (and certain monochrome models are now dirt cheap), they
don't begin to approach the lowliest photo-quality inkjets, where
digital photography is concerned.

However, as Thomas indicated, above, a laser printer would be a
superior choice, for text documents, charts and graphs, Web pages,
etc.; it's far faster and much more economical, as I've happily
discovered, from personal experience.

That's why I use my refurbished Samsung ML-6060 monochrome laser
($154.56 total cost, in 2003) to tackle those jobs requiring many
pages. It's even cranked out some (.PDF-based) owner's manuals,
which look as good (or better!) than lots of factory-bundled ones.

Best of all, I still haven't had to replace (or refill) the Samsung's
original toner cartridge...not bad, indeed, as I've been operating
the ML-6060, since May of '03!

How are current HP laserjets, if you're familiar with them? I had
a very nice Okidata laser printer (with built-in Postscript, no
driver needed) for a number of years, and toner cartridges worked
well and were fairly inexpensive. Certainly far less expensive to
use than any inkjet. But eventually it stopped printing nicely and
I discovered that it needed a new drum, which was quite expensive.
I haven't kept up with HP's laser printers, but their original
Laserjet, my earlier Laserjet II, and up to at least the Laserjets 3
an 4 included a new drum in each toner cartridge, so with them there
wouldn't ever be a sudden, unexpected major purchase to keep the
printer running. Are toner cart's with inner drums still used in
laser printers from HP or from any other manufacturers?

Hello, ASAAR:

Sorry, man, if I gave you the wrong impression. I'm hardly an authority
on laser printers -- or anything else, for that matter. <g>

I do know my Samsung ML-6060's toner cartridge has a built-in drum,
though.

Cordially,
John Turco <jtur.RemoveThis@concentric.net>

PS: Isn't Okidata noted for LED printers?

On the internet everyone's an authority. Smile Thanks for the
Samsung info. If I get a laser printer next year I'll be sure to
check out their printers as well as HP's.

I have had no problems with the brother models using Windows XP. Lexmarks
have given me some trouble. I have a working HL-1440 and a HL-2040. Trouble
free. Both cost me less than $100 each.

That makes replacements far more expensive. Lexmark also bundles the drum
with the toner on its cheaper printers. Brother on the other hand has a
separate drum and toner, even on its cheapest printers. That make buying
replacement toner [genuine Brother toner] affordable.
