Archived from groups: rec>photo>digital (more info?)

On long trips, we've been storing our digital photos on a Western
Digital Passport HD, fed from our laptop computer.

Would anyone have a better suggestion for storing photos?

In particular, we are looking for a back up, in case the laptop fails.
We have to bring the laptop on the trip for writing and for GPS, so
loading the digital photos onto a seperate HD has not been a problem,
but.. if the laptop should fail.. so, we have been thinking about
bringing along a 2nd laptop as backup, but wanted to ask if there were
other wonderful ways to store our photos.

Is there somethinhg other than a computer that would allow us to load
up the WD HD?

Any storage suggestions would be appriecated.

There are a class of devices called portable storage devices (or PSDs) that
generally have a laptop drive in it, with a card reader and battery. You can
upload your files to the device, and later plug it into your computer as a
USB removable disk.

Here is a USA store that sells several different brands:
http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/s.nl;jsessionid=ac112b1f1f43f2e8db8e3...440f9da

In terms of units, two that often times are talked about because of how fast
they copy the media and how long the battery lasts are:
Nexto 2300
CompactDrive PD70X

At a higher cost, there are units that have a screen so you can view your
pictures. The Vosonic/Wolverine units are the cheapest, but the Epson units
are said to have the best screen.

I had an earlier CompactDrive that I have since given to my daughter since it
doesn't support the newer 4GB CF cards (the newest CompactDrive does), and the
Vosonic VP6230. The CompactDrive uses AA rechargable batteries, and works
well. With the Vosonic, you have to be really careful in inserting CF cards (I
bent the pins in mine), and I've had some timing problems in unloading it to my
Linux system, but I can work around the problems.

There are also standalone units that burn a CD or DVD from a memory card, and
presumably if you are going on a long trip, you could burn two DVDs and mail
one back to your home.

There are also some devices with two USB connections that you plug a card
reader or camera into one, and a portable disk drive into another, and it will
copy the files from the first USB device to the second. I'm not sure if they
are still made, but most of the units have been fairly slow (USB 1.1 speeds)
and take an odd number of AA batteries. Here is an older article about one
such device:

I'd suggest getting enough memory cards for the camera that you don't
need to reuse them for the duration of the trip. Backing them up as
you go along is a good idea, but if the laptop fails then the original
media are still there for when you get home. Memory cards are very
robust, and if you get several small ones rather than one huge one you
can distribute them among your luggage or whatever so if one bit of
luggage goes AWOL you don't lose all your pics.

Several questions/comments:

does your laptop have a CD or DVD writer? If so, how about copying out to
CD/DVD and mailing them home. Might work for a long trip.

I tend to have enough cards to last me for most trips - cards are cheap.
Currently, I have 1 2gb and 2 1gb cards for my 5.1mp camera which produces
about 9mb raw files - should be good for about 455 photos. I also take my
laptop which has a recently installed 120gb drive - about 80gb free - and
it does have a CD writer.

How about an Ipod ? I use one that is set up to automatically sync all
photos. If you already have an iPod, it might make sense as a back up, but
probably not just for image storage. A USB powered hard drive would be a
better economic choice.

If you have enough disk space in your laptop, you could put one copy on the
internal drive and a backup on the external. Then pack them separately to
avoid the "all your eggs in one basket" scenario. USB drives are getting
pretty cheap.

Depends on how much you shoot. When I shoot RAW, I get single images that
are over 30 MBs. It doesn't take long to fill up a CD. DVDs have more
capacity but I would still use up a number on a long trip.

There are also some hard drive devices designed specifically for off-loading
images from memory cards. One advantage is that you just insert the card and
push a copy button - no waiting for a computer to boot before copying the
files. Many of these are small enough to carry with you during the day and
you can back up your photos on the go. On the other hand, those are
single-purpose devices so you have to think about whether this makes sense
for you.

How about that. I don't have one. Seems a big waste of money to me.

They are somewhat expensive, too.

And what is your strategy if your one hard drive fails?

The epson P3000 and P5000 can copy data to a USB hard drive
without the use of a computer.

Devices like the P3000 & P5000 have a screen so you can review
photons as well as copy your memory cards (check which ones
it supports). I have traveled on long trips to foreign
countries without a laptop using devices like these.

Depending on your budget (since you were considering a second laptop),
consider and device may fail. With high speed compact flash cards
not under $40/gigabyte, memory is really cheap.

Here is my strategy I used on my recent trip to Africa
for a photo safari with 2 DSLRs:

about 74 Gbytes of compact flash cards
1 laptop with about 55 gigabytes free
1 epson P5000 (80 Gbytes)
2 160 gigabyte usb laptop drives (these are about $120 each).

I returned with about 68 gigabytes on cards, 3 full backups
on hard disks (epson and 2 usb drives) and most photos on
the laptop, so 4+ backups. Once invested, the backups will
last many years.

You obviously don't take many photos or you go on very short trips.

I use a laptop (120GB HD)with a DVD burner and an external USB2 (250GB) hard
drive. I copy the photo files from my CF cards to the laptop HD and then
copy those files to the external HD. Once that has been accompolished I
delete the photos from the CF card. Periodically I burn the photos to 2
DVDs. If you want to make sure you save the photos, you can't have too many
copies of the them.

A couple of weeks ago I up graded my USB2 external HD to a 500GB RAID 1 HD.
This is actually two 500GB drives that are exact duplicates of each other.
To the laptop it appears as a single HD, but hardware/software in the drive
enclosure writes everything to both drives, thus creating a automatic
backup.

My stategy would be to load a Linux Live CD, mount an external hard drive
and recover the data. I've done this on desktop systems several times.

Thank you all for your precise and expanded replies.

After damaging the electrical cord on my laptop and realizing how
vulnerable my "storage system" was, we thought about fixing the broken
laptop for $130, and then taking it along as back for digital file
storage.

We bought an Office Max Evered xt5000t laptop ($700) which has a DVD
burner and 100 GB HD (two HD bays total), so an extra laptop would
have been available.

Just a reminder, if you are using a laptop as your only means of
conveying your digital files to storage and that laptop fails, you are
stuck.

With that in mind, I think we'll buy the Compact Drive PD 70x, because
it's a separate storage device that is smaler than the laptop , has
super fast transfer speeds and does not cost too much more than fixing
the laptop.

All of your suggestions were useful. Thanks for your help.

Strictly speaking, RAID1 isn't a backup, although it is still very
useful. RAID 1/4/5/6/10 protect against drive hardware failures or
sometimes data corruption on a single drive, but nothing else. I use
RAID for my data drives at home, because I can't afford the downtime if
they fail, but it is still necessary to back them up with another
method.

Freudian slip?

Actually, what I said is correct. You can review the photons
you captured with your camera. The camera converts photons
into an electronic signal, and the P3000 and P5000
convert that signal back into photons for you to see.
Pretty amazing! Wink
