Are there any digicams which allow you to enter a code before you take
a
pic, with the code forming part of the filename? EG enter 123 and have
the
filename be 123001.jpg

I doubt you'll find that. Nearly all cameras preface the filename numbers by
their own unique camera maker's string. Which I find important when I have
dozens of folders taken from many different cameras and I want to more easily
keep track of which batch was taken by which camera. Or when using editing
utilities that depend on which camera model they have to deal with, which don't
rely on EXIF data. Some unique programs use that camera prefix when sorting
which camera-specific operations to perform.

But what you will find on nearly all cameras is the choice of which folder you
want to save your photos in before you take them. Changing to a different folder
with each photo, if you want to play that often with menus while shooting. This
will give you the same results. Then you can rename them by whatever folder they
were in as you move them to other media. Get RenameMaster from
http://www.joejoesoft.com/vcms/108/ and it'll let you rename each folder's
contents to anything you want or even by using the EXIF info in each photo.

Yes, I have my Nikon D200 set to prefix filenames with my initials.
Maybe more camera than you had in mind.

The folder option would do just as well provided it isn't too
difficult to set each time a photo is taken. We run a nursery school
and photographs of the children are subsequently printed and put into
their profiles. I'm trying to move towards a more automated system
whereby photographs can be extracted by filename and autromatically
transferred to the correct profile. The alternative is for someone who
is capable of recognising each child (eg a teacher) to look at each
photo and write down first its filename and second the child who is in
it. This is seriously labour-intensive

But is it easy to alter the prefix before each photo and have that
prefix appear at the front of each filename?

No, it takes menu diving and navagating an alphabetic menu on the LCD
with arrow keys. I'm pretty sure there's only room for 3 characters.
Some people type long text messages on their cell phones so I guess it's
theoretically possible to change more often though I wouldn't want to.

Some cameras allow audio recording to accompany images, that's probably
the more common approach for comments on every photo.
