It finally happened....my Kodak DX7440 was on a tripod and the wind
blew it over. To my dismay, the whole lens and barrel seperated from
the camera body. Surprisingly, there doesn't appear to be any broken
parts. There are three little pegs that fit into grooves in the barrel
shaft. When you turn the camera on and off, you can see the slanted
grooves go up and down. There is even a spot where the grooves rotate
so that I can insert the three pegs into these grooves. The problem
is, I insert the pegs in the grooves, and the camera takes the lens in
some, but it does not full retract like it should. I am wondering if I
don't have the lens positioned right within these grooves. Has anyone
ever successfully re-inserted a Kodak lens and have any advice for me?
I suspect the time has come to purcase a new fancy camera, but since a
home repair seems possible here, I thought I would check.
Thanks,

I am sure Kodak would repair it for you, but the flat rate might be high
enough to make buying a newer model a better deal. I suspect it is dead. >> Stay informed about: Kodak DX 7440 Reinserting Lens |

My thoughts exactly. It just seems like there may be some trick to
re-inserting it. There are two tracks that these pegs can go in, and I
am not sure exactly which one is corect. So far in my attempts,
neither has seemed to work but I am not sure I have gotten the pegs in
the upper track.
That new Sony H2 is looking pretty good and the price seems excellent.
It is amazing how the prices drop. I think I paid over $300 for my
DX7440 and the Sony seems like a much better camera.
Any more ideas?

This summer on vacation I dropped my cx6445 (very similar to dx6440). I'll
spare you the sob story. When I picked up the camera the lens was now at an
odd angle, and the camera knew something was wrong as well. It seems it has
the same lens as the 7440 (three pins and all), and I considered the 7440 as
a replacement. Well I fiddled with the lens a little, and I'm fairly handy,
but something delicate in there does not survive such a drop.
Kodak has an online repair estimator, and the repair price came to about $90
or $100. Fuggedaboutit.
I'm very disappointed really. Kodak gets trashed here, but, the camera took
nice pictures and was easy to use, and the batteries lasted forever. I
managed to pick up a Sony DSC-600 store display for $118 as a "replacement",
but sometimes it can't focus, and won't use lithium AA's. I may have to
ditch the Sony and get a "real" camera too, like my Kodak was.

Hello, Andrew:
"DarnToothySam" not only sells/auctions secondhand digital cameras
(and their individual parts), he also fixes them, and his prices
seem quite reasonable. Here are his Web sites:
DarnToothySam.com

DarnToothySam - eBay Store

Good luck!

Greetings Andrew,
I know it is possible to repair your camera. I am afraid, however, that the
camera needs service and the right tools to bring your lens and camera back
together. You also then would have the task of calibration and more. So, the
camera can be fixed but there would be a standard charge. More than likely
you will get a better deal by looking for a new camera or possibly trading
this camera to the Kodak Tradein program. Let me know if you want to know
more.
Sorry for the accident and loss of the camera camera, I am sure it was
frustrating.
