Hi; I have had a small Cannon A610 now for six months, everything is
great, no problems at all, I have a good basic understanding now of
Digital photo's work and have been told by many that I have a good eye
for taking great shot's my question is, since I am limted on amount of
money to be spent I have been thinking of investing in either he Nikon
D50 or the Cannon RebelXT I want to upgrade and the ability to shoot
in low light which the Cannon P/S cant do I am good at taking up close
shots of people and animals etc any help would be most appreciated

Do you care about an external flash? Nikon has the most advanced external
flashes, as the flash and the camera communicate nicely.

What you want to do is find the lens that best suits your needs, and
then buy the camera body that will fit it. So you want a good, fast lens
for low light (f/2 or quicker), and depending on what you mean by 'close
up,' you either want a macro or a zoom.
So you look at the lenses available from Nikon and Canon, figure out
which ones you prefer, and then base your purchase that way. I'd add
that Pentax is a cost-effective alternative to Nikon and Canon, but
suffers a little in the long zoom category. >> Stay informed about: Which DSLR ?? |

I've posted on several other threads about a PS A620 I just bought two
days ago. A relative, who owns a traditional (film) Canon, apparently
state-of-the-art in about Y2K, told me to return it unless I was sure
it would accept the various expensive lenses she was willing to give
me. I do not know the model of the Canon camera she owns, the
conversation being brief due to the holiday.
My question is Do most camera lenses made by the same manufacturer
"translate" from film-based camera to digital? I also am interested in
low light photography and would like to make use especially of a
telephoto lens.
Thank you. >> Stay informed about: Which DSLR ?? |

The answer is: Some do, some don't. Pentax is the best in this regard.
Canon (IIRC) is a close second. Nikon not so much, though still pretty
good. It also varies from camera to camera within some brands.
So ask and find out which lenses your relative has and is willing to
part with, then find out if they're the ones you need, and then find out
which body they'll fit. If the lenses are new, they'll probably fit. If
they aren't new, they still might. >> Stay informed about: Which DSLR ?? |

Granted Pentax did there design homework on this. Most Canon lenses
made in the last 20 years (all autofocus) will fit their current DSLR,
FD Canon lenses won't. Nikon is split on their pro level cameras and
the D200 accept any Nikon lens made since about 1983, Ai, AiS, and all
autofocus lenses. their amateur cameras D50, D70, D100 will only have
full function with the Nikon mount autofocus lenses, they will accept
and take pictures with nonautofocus lenses but the metering system
won't work.
Hope this clears things up.

People who have the Rebels, seem pleased with them. Lots of great images
have been posted on pbase.com and photography-on-the.net/forum. The prices
keep falling, including the Canon 20D. Check it out too.

You stated that you want to be able to shoot in low light. I looked
at hundreds of sample photos over several months and went for the
Canon because the CMOS sensor had the lowest noise levels at high
ISOs. This was a very important feature for me.

If the Canon lenses are autofocus they should work on all Canon DSLRs.

Hi Robert
Both Canon and Nikon are very good.
Both can make better images than
most photographers will ever achieve.
Canon does better high ISO. Nikon has
ergonomics that some folks prefer.
Canon has full-frame. Nikon DX
effectively adds 50% to your lens's
reach. Canon has a lower-priced line
of sharp (L) lenses. Nikon SB800 and
SB600 flashes are wondrous.
Go play with both at a shop. Flip a coin
if you have problems making decisions.
Can't lose either way.
Great lenses are available for both. Great
lenses are the key with dSLRs. That's
where you'll be spending the real money.

All that has been written below may be true. However, your camera (the
A620) does not accept any SLR lenses made by anybody (as you can readily
find out, its lens is non-removable). The Canon DSLRs do accept EF mount
Canon lenses (ie the ones used on the EOS film SLRs). >> Stay informed about: Which DSLR ?? |

However Nikon manual focus SLR lenses work on DSLRs (on my D200 they
even meter properly), so you can pick up used ones quite cheap. Canon
manual focus (FD mount) lenses don't fit EOS bodies (at least without a
converter). Canon does not make any SLRs with any mount except their EF
mount, as far as I know. >> Stay informed about: Which DSLR ?? |

Canon has two similar but slightly different mounts. The EF works on all
Canon digital and 35mm SLR cameras. The EF-S only works on some Canon
DSLRs. It is for DSLRs with sensors smaller than a 35mm film frame. It
won't work on a 10D though.

Better than any canon or nikon. reason being why they others need so
