I am thinking of getting this as a PNS to augment my Canon 10D. The DSLR is
just to bulky to take to many places so I am looking for something compact,
fast and takes good pix. My budget is $500. Ideas or opinions on this
question would be appreciated. BTW, I would like an automatic lens cover on
whatever camera I choose.

Thnx, Jim

Panasonic LX1: true 16:9 sensor, IS, 28mm. the worse in terms of sensor
noise.
Fujifilm F30: good for high ISO.
Pentax Optio W10: Water resistance
Canon Ixus 800-IS: IS
Sony DSC-T9: small

what about best picture quality in a very portable PNS?

if picture quality suffers, then what's the point? I liked the Canon A620
until i tried it and realized if the thing was not on a tripod it was very
difficult to hold steady enough to get a good shot. strange.

I would pick LX1 because it has the best lens among all the portables.
They all have compromises. You have to make the choice what suite you
best. On the other hand, if you want a camera that can stand for a bit
of abuse, the Pentax W10 sounds like a ticket when you don't want to
take 10D to have water splash in a rafting expedition. Or a really tiny
camera that you can always put it in your pants pockets.
