When you use the SB-600 external flash
on the Nikon D70s what is the correct
selection for the white balance.

Do you select the "lighting bolt" position
or the "A". I can't find anywhere in the
instructions for the flash nor the camera
where it deals with this.

Your assistance much appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Denny B

Then you didn't look hard enough. The section on white balance
summarizes what you need to know.

Bottom line is that either one can be used. By the way, the "lightning
bolt" signifies electronic flash.

You use the one that gives you the results you want.

"A" works best in most settings, but it can be fooled. If you are using
the flash for fill flash, for example, "A" or "Flash" (the lightning
bolt) might be a little cool, especially if the dominant lighting is
tungsten. If you are using filter gels over the flash, you should use
the correct white balance setting for that filter gel -- usually.

However, getting it wrong is not fatal. You can play with white balance
all you want in editing later.

I shoot RAW and then leave it in A. However, there are times that I override
this. I bought filters for my flash that are useful in various circumstances.
For example, I can put the tungsten filter on the flash when I am in a room
full of tungsten lights and then just set the white balance to the tungsten
bulb.

When shooting RAW, you can always adjust the white balance with little to no
detriment (there is some argument that Nikon makes some white balance changes
to the RAW data prior to file creation ... which is why I leave the disclaimer
of little).
