Just a couple of days ago - after a great deal of research - I
purchased a Nikon D40x, and let me say I'm as pleased with this camera
as I could possibly be! I mean WOW! It's fun to use and easy too,
and the picture quality is astounding. I'm sure this is only the
first of many Nikon products I'll be purchasing over the next decade.

That said, I find the software which accompanied the D40x,
"PictureProject", absolutely subpar. Luckily I'm a Vista user and
have found that the image software which ships with Home Premium is
much more intuitive, helpful and useful. Am I alone in this
evaluation?

Does anyone have any idea why Nikon would commit to such a kludgy
program?

Simple.
Because they make money from selling (an equally kludgy but) far more
capable program "Nikon Capture NX".

Picture Project is actually very good for the gazillions of people who just
want to do a few easy things with their photos, and don't want to have to
buy some more advanced software that will only make their heads hurt. My
sister uses PP and loves it. Her camera is a Coolpix 4100. Both camera and
software are perfect for her.

It's very fashionable though for people in the newsgroups to pan Picture
Project, so you will find lots of folks here to agree with you.

For me it is Nikon SW in general. The SW for my Nikon Cool Scan slide
scanner is buggy also.
