I'm thinking of buying my first digital SLR and have read great things about
the D40 and D40x. While the D40 only has 6mp and the D40x has 10mp, I read
that the higher pixel level doesn't necessarily deliver better picture
quality.

Here in the UK, the price difference is over £100 between the two models.
Does anyone have an opinion on weather the D40x is worth the extra money?

Many thanks

Jeff

If you don't regularly blow up your photos to more than 8x10, then go with
the D40. In other than poster size, you won't notice any diference.

I just bought the D40 and it seems to work fine. I was contemplating
the D80/200 since i like to spend money on gadgets and stuff. I was
up on Ken Rockwell's website (www.kenrockwell.com) and he recommended
the D40 so I went ahead and bought it. He said that for the majority
of his shots, the D40 fits the bill. If he has to do anything that
requires a lot of manual adjustments, he'll break out the D200.

But unless you're going to blow up the pictures, the D40 is fine. I'm
contemplating the Nikon 18-200mm lens and it's $900. But the D40 cost
me $541 at circuit city...so if you add that up, it's close to $1500.

Costco is selling a D200 with a 18-135mm lens fo $1999. So in
hindsight, I may have opted to spend the extra $500 and get the
D200...altho I hear the D200 is significantly heavier than the D40
(albeit a much better quality camera). The D80 is $1249 with the
18-135mm lens. If I had to do it over again, I'd probably opt for the
D80 at $1249.

I have the D40 and it's great. You'll be more than happy with either
one. Honestly, I would rather have the D40x for a couple reasons:

1) Extra megapixels. I tend to spend a lot of time post-editing on the
computer. Sometimes I do some extreme cropping and with only 6mp it's
hard to keep the resolution high enough to print.

2)The D40 shoots at 2.5 fps and the D40x shoots at 3 fps. It doesn't
seem like much but you can tell the difference.

3) D40x goes down to ISO 100, D40 only goes to ISO 200. This probably
isn't even a big enough difference to note, but some may disagree.

That's all just my opinion Smile

True, but higher pixel count is also helpful if you want to crop you
pictures without loosing quality.
E.g. when the tele zoom just wasn't quite long enough.

The D40x will do larger blow ups, if you don't mind increased noise at
high iso.

I bought my D80 with the 18-135 a few weeks ago at BuyDig.com, for $1,119
with free shipping. Checking just now I see they've gone up 95 cents. Still
pretty reasonable. Smile

It wouldn't be for me. Here in the U.S. the difference is still about $200,
I think. Since you can now buy the D40 with 18-55 and free shipping for
about $525, relatively speaking the D40x represents quite a price increase
for a gain small enough that most users probably would never notice it
anyway.

Please explain what "increased noise at high iso" has to do with "larger
blow ups". That makes no sense.

The larger you blow something up, the more apparent the noise is. The
6 meg camera has less noise than the 10 meg camera because of it's
larger pixels. So, you gain in resolution going to 10 megs, but you
lose some image quality due to noise, if you shoot at high ISOs.

I have 12x18 from a 6MP D70 that look great. The only good argument
for 10 vs 6 MP is cropping.

Many thanks to you all for your insight and advice - it is greatly
appreciated. I think I'll be going for the D40.

I previously picked up the D40x and after comparing it side-by-side
with my brother in-law's D40 returned it. I've got a D40 due in
tomorrow from B&H and the $200+ saved went towards a 55-200mm VR
lens. The kit 18-55 and 200mm VR aren't exactly the best glass
offered by Nikkor, but combine for a decent range at an affordable
price while maximizing portability.

Also, I don't intend to make enlargements much beyond 8x10, so
cropping & enlarging weren't terribly important for me. I'll consider
upgrading to the D80 or 200 once I've got a little more experience
under my belt and I have a better selection of lenses.
