Unfortunately, we can't avoid the made in China badge... Almost everything
is being made in China, today... My mother's new HP laptop is made to the
last screw in China, and a very good one it is, too... I bought a very good
computer speakers set, with a subwoofer, only 22 euros, and I keep my
fingers crossed... Made in China, obviously... My nytech camera
www.nytech.de is also made in China, like everything sold by Lidl...
Although the sensor is Sony and the lens is Pentax. The only exception is my
Canon printer, its inks and paper which are all made in Japan.

Hello, Chris:

Well, the crooks who copy name-brand merchandise, and then severely
undercut the real manufacturers and genuine distributors, are very
deserving of all the scorn they receive, both here and elsewhere.
Today, the main hotbed of such nefarious activity is Communist China,
and not Japan.

Of course, there's no denying that the Japanese "knock off ninjas"
certainly did produce plenty of junk, during their heyday, decades
ago. Razz

Hello, Marco:

Precisely! If these Chinese entrepreneurs want respect and riches, then,
they'd better go about actually >earning< those things...just as their
Japanese counterparts did, once upon a time.

Hello, Tzortzakakis:

In reality, over 80% of current notebook computers are made in "free"
China (i.e., Taiwan).

Report: China to take notebook crown

August 7, 2003

China is expected to displace Taiwan as the world's largest
manufacturer of notebook PCs by the end of the year, according to IMS
Research.

The market research firm, based in the U.K., reports that notebook PC
production has exploded there over the past year. Most major foreign
notebook PC makers have either completed or are starting to relocate
factories to China.

The Chinese plants, owned mainly by Taiwanese companies, will churn
out 20 million units this year, more than 50 percent of this year’s
total worldwide volume, according to IMS Research.

Some basic notebook design work will follow the move to China, but
research and development operations will remain at company
headquarters, said Ann Bird, China market analyst at IMS Research.
These headquarters are mainly in Taiwan, she said.

China's largest notebook PC production base is in Suzhou, a province
in eastern China. The annual output of PCs there is close to 10
million units--about a quarter of the world's total, according to a
report from news agency Xinhua.

The nine leading companies in Taiwan have established plants in
Suzhou. These companies include Uniwell Computer, Acer and Mitac
International.

<edited for brevity>

Hello, John:

Hence, the Taiwanese notebook makers are simply going to continue the
larger trend of exploiting all that abundant, Commie slave labor, in
mainland China.
